Box Score INSTITUTE, W.Va -- In a game that was rescheduled from Thursday night due to poor weather, the Falcons picked up an impressive road win over the host West Virginia State Yellow Jackets on Sunday afternoon, 81-64.
The battle between Mountain East Conference foes was a close one early, as NDC narrowly led by one, 14-13, just under seven minutes into the game. A pair of consecutive buckets from the Yellow Jackets turned the tables, giving WVSU a 17-14 lead with 11:45 left before halftime.
That three-point margin would mark the Yellow Jackets largest lead of the game.
NDC trailed 25-23 with 5:50 remaining in the first half until
Kim Cook nailed a 3-pointer to put the Falcons back on top, 26-25.
Martha Nagbe then split a pair of free throws to put the Falcons up two, 27-25, but a Yellow Jackets basket tied the game.
With the first half winding down and the game tied at 27,
Celine Mangan drained a shot from beyond the arc to give the Falcons the lead again, 30-27. From that point on, the Falcons never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the game.
Nagbe sparked the Falcons with two baskets in the final minute of the first half, and NDC went into halftime holding a 36-27 lead.
Out of the gate in the second half, a pair of
Kelsey Miller free throws was complemented by another 3-pointer from Mangan, pushing the Falcons' lead to 41-29. Minutes later with just 12:29 remaining in the game,
Lauren Langenderfer made two free throws to push the Falcons' lead to 13, their biggest of the game to that point.
The Falcons held a comfortable 54-41 lead with 10:28 remaining, but a 3-pointer from the Yellow Jackets cut NDC's lead to 10. A lay-up from WVSU then cut the Falcons' lead to just seven, 57-50, with 6:51 remaining, but that's as close as the Yellow Jackets would come.
NDC responded with a mini 9-3 run, capped off by an And-One play from Langenderfer, and the Falcons led by 13 again with just 5:10 left in the game.
From there, the Falcons cruised to an 81-64 road victory over the Yellow Jackets. Nagbe stuffed the stat sheet for NDC with 26 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Langenderfer also scored 16 points to help lead NDC to victory.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 15-11 on the season, including an 11-9 mark in MEC play.
