Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Having lost four consecutive games coming into Saturday, the Notre Dame College women's basketball team got back on the winning track with an impressive 82-61 win over the Mountain East Conference rival Charleston Golden Eagles. The Falcons (3-5 overall, 1-3 MEC) picked up their first MEC win of the season, giving the team momentum going forward.
NDC came out of the gate motivated and hungry for a win, taking a 19-14 lead after just one quarter of action.
Martha Nagbe drained a 3-pointer to open the second quarter, and hit two free throws on the Falcons' next possession to give NDC a 24-14 lead.
However, the Golden Eagles responded with a 12-5 run, cutting NDC's lead to just three, 29-26, with 1:35 remaining before halftime.Â
The Falcons responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, the first from
Kim Cook and the second from
Alyssa Kraus, pushing their lead back to nine, 35-26, going into halftime.
Kelsey Miller opened the second half and third quarter with a lay-up to give NDC an 11-point lead, but again the Golden Eagles fought back to trim NDC's lead to just four, 37-33.
Following four substitutions for NDC,
Lauren Langenderfer checked back in and immediately hit a jumper.
Ciara Reed then nailed a fast-break 3-pointer to give NDC a nine-point lead again, this time 42-33.
From there, the Falcons never looked back.
Langenderfer converted a lay-up attempt and Kraus made a pair of free throws, making the score 51-38 with just three minutes remaining in the third quarter. After both teams exchanged a few buckets, Nagbe scored a lay-up to commence the third quarter as NDC led 58-44 going into the fourth and final frame.
Early in the fourth quarter, Kraus hit another shot from deep and followed that possession with another lay-up, extending the Falcons' lead to 18 points, 68-50.
On NDC's next possession,
Jessica Garcia hit a jumper of her own to push NDC's lead to 20, and the Falcons iced the game from there, winning 81-62 over Charleston.
The Falcons relied upon even scoring across the board, led by 17 points from Nagbe. Langenderfer scored 13 points, Kraus scored 12 and Miller added 11 more as the Falcons' balanced attack dominated in the victory.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-5 on the season, including a 1-3 mark in MEC play.
The Falcons will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 17 and Friday, Dec. 18 for a pair of games in Puerto Rico, as part of their annual December road trip.Â
