Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va -- Playing the final game of a three-game road trip to start the New Year, the Falcons defeated the host West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on the road Thursday night, winning 73-56. NDC used a full team effort to earn the victory as 11 different Falcons scored on the night.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after an easy lay-up from
Lauren Langenderfer. The Bobcats responded with a 7-0 run to take a 9-7 lead with 11:42 remaining in the first half.Â
The closely contested battle continued throughout the first half, as both sides were tied at 19 with just 4:51 left in the half.Â
And then the Falcons went on a run.
Celine Mangan made a jumpshot to give NDC the lead again, and
Jessica Garcia sank two free throws to push the lead to four, 23-19. Langenderfer continued to find close-range shots around the hoop, making consecutive lay-ups, and
Kelsey Miller scored on NDC's last three possessions of the half, giving the Falcons a 33-22 advantage at the break.
Early in the second half,
Molly Ritz scored a lay-up to maintain the 11-point lead, this time at 39-28 with 15:35 remaining. The Bobcats again refused to simply roll over, going on a quick 6-0 run to cut the deficit down to five, 39-34.
Garcia nailed a jumper on NDC's ensuing possession before
Ciara Reed nailed a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 10 for the Falcons. Once again, WVW used a quick 4-0 spurt to cut the Falcons' lead to just six, 44-38, with 11:10.
Holding a narrow six-point lead on the road with time winding down, the Falcons stepped up as a unit and sparked a run to take back the momentum.
Two more free throws from Garcia and a jumper from
Hope Thorbahn gave NDC a 10-point lead again. A completed and-one from
Martha Nagbe was followed by a basket from Miller, pushing NDC's lead to 15 - their biggest lead to that point.Â
Langenderfer and Garcia each nailed 3-pointer of their own, Ritz scored a lay-up, and just like that, the Falcons' led the host Bobcats 61-40 with 6:12 remaining.
From there, the Falcons used a collective effort to cruise to the finish line, winning by a final score of 73-56.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-6 overall, including 3-5 on the road and 3-4 in Mountain East Conference play.
The Falcons will next compete on Saturday, Jan. 10 at home against West Virginia State. Tip-off is schedule for 2 p.m.
