NDC falls in clash of the Falcons

Box Score
FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- On a night where the Notre Dame Falcons shot extremely well, they still fell short on the road, in a 90-72 loss to Fairmont State.

For the Falcons (7-5, 3-3 MEC) (the loss was their fifth straight on the road, while for Fairmont State (7-5, 4-2) the victory was their third in a row in conference play.

Notre Dame made their first seven shots on the night, and shot 51.9-percent (27-for-52) from the floor, but Fairmont State was able to come away with the win after committing just seven turnovers, including none in the first half, while tallying 20 assists.

Both teams shot extremely well over the first five minutes of the contest, as 12 of the first 15 shots fell between both teams combined. Notre Dame hit on all six of their shots from the floor during that stretch, and found themselves down just a pair (15-13) at the 14:36-mark.

However, FSU was able to extend their lead to double digits over the following three minutes, as they went on a 10-2 run, and took a 25-15 lead at the 11:28-mark.

While the Falcons continued to shoot extremely well, shooting 71.4-percent (10-for-14) from the floor over the first 13 minutes of the game, FSU didn't commit a single turnover during that stretch, and also shot well, hitting on 63.0-percent (17) of their 27 shots and took a 41-25 advantage with 6:17 remaining.

Fairmont State's ability to continue to take care of the ball allowed them to maintain a double digit lead through most of the remainder of the half, and they scored 15 points off eight NDC turnovers. Notre Dame was able to trim the lead to nine (47-38) after Tyree Gaiter hit a 3-pointer with 1:34 left in the half, but that was as close as they would get, as FSU took a 54-42 lead at the half.

Notre Dame shot exceptionally well in the opening stanza, hitting 62.5-percent (15-for-24) of their shots from the floor, and netted 4-of-6 (66.7-percent) of their shots from beyond the arc, but Fairmont State didn't commit a single turnover in the first half, and also shot well, hitting 55.3-percent (21-for-38) of their shots from the floor. Gaiter led the Falcons with 15 points in the first half.

While the Falcons continued to shoot well at the start of the second half, shooting well above 60-percent from the floor over the first seven minutes, Fairmont State nailed five of their first six shots from the floor in the second stanza as well, as their lead grew to 20 (74-54) with 12:45 remaining.

Unfortunately for the Falcons, things didn't change much through the remainder of the game, as FSU maintained a double digit lead through the rest of the contest, and never allowed NDC a chance to get back into the contest.

The Falcons shot well on the night, making 51.9-percent (27-for-52) of their shots, including a 45.5-percent (5-for-11) clip from 3-point land. Three Falcons scored in double figures, and Gaiter led the way with 25 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the charity stripe. Lawrence DeArmond added 13 points and three assists while Najeeb Johnson contributed with 11 points.

The Falcons are back in action on Thursday, Jan. 8, for another MEC road tilt as they take on West Virginia Wesleyan, in Buckhannon, W.Va. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
