Full ResultsPAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College wrestling team made the cross-town journey to Lake Erie College on Sunday afternoon to take on the host Storm in dual meet action. The Falcons came into the meet ranked second in Division II while the Storm ranked 15th, and while both sides battled to the very end, NDC fell just short by a narrow score of 18-16.
The meet began with the 125 pound bout featuring Lake Erie's Forrest Glogouski and NDC's
Jacob Goodwin. The Dallas native came away with an important win for the Falcons, winning 8-5 and giving the Falcons an early 3-0 lead.Â
The Storm won via pinfall at 133 pounds to take a 6-3 lead in the meet, but then
Maurice Miller came to the mat for the Falcons. Wrestling at 141 pounds, Miller defeated Nick Boggs via 8-3 decision, giving tying the score, 6-6.
However, the Storm again tied the meet with a 3-0 win at 149 pounds, taking back the lead, 9-6.
With the Storm leading by three and NDC looking for momentum, the Falcons looked to defending national champion
Jonatan Rivera.Â
Rivera squared off with LEC's Christian Baughman at 157 pounds in a crucial point of the meet, and came away with a narrow 3-2 decision to tie score three more team points for NDC. Rivera's win tied the meet at nine, adding to the intensity of the day.
Following the pattern of the earlier matches, the Storm again responded to tie the meet with a narrow 1-0 win at 165 pounds. The win at 165 gave the Storm a 12-9 lead through six matches, but fortunately the Falcons had two of their studs up next in
Joey Davis and
Garrett Lineberger.
At 174 pounds, Davis continued his undefeated collegiate career with a 6-3 win over the Storm's Nick Vandermeer, earning three more points for NDC and tying the meet at 12. At 184 pounds, Lineberger dominated the match from start to finish, winning 14-0 via major decision and giving the Falcons a 16-12 lead with two matches remaining.
However, Lake Erie fought back in the final two matches of the day, scoring two wins for a combined six points, and giving the Storm an 18-16 win over the Falcons.
The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 on the road at West Liberty University in dual meet competition. Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
