Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Defense was the name of the game for the Notre Dame College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon against the Glenville State College Pioneers. The Falcons stifled the Pioneers' offensive attack, holding GSC to 30.8 percent shooting and winning by a final score of 78-66.
Th Falcons (10-6, 6-4 Mountain East) jumped out to an early 7-0 advantage after
Martha Nagbe nailed a 3-pointer. However, the Pioneers responded with a 10-5 run to cut the difference to just two, 12-10, in favor of NDC.
Alyssa Kraus immediately responded with a 3-pointer, assisted by
Lauren Langenderfer, to give NDC momentum again.
After the Pioneers cut the deficit to just three, 21-18, Kraus responded again as she assisted
Ciara Reed on a 3-pointer, pushing the lead back to six with 5:42 left in the first half.
At halftime, the Falcons led the Pioneers 37-27, but knew there was plenty of work left to do in the second half.
Kelsey Miller scored six points in the first minute of the second half, giving the Falcons a 43-27 lead. And then the flood gates opened, as a lay-up from Nagbe and a jumper from Miller extended the lead to 19 points, 48-27, with 17:03 remaining in the game.
The Pioneers battled back with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 13, but the Falcons continued to control the tempo of the game.Â
With 9:30 left in the game,
Celine Mangan delivered another blow to the Pioneers as she drained a 3-pointer to give NDC a 54-38 lead.
From there, the Falcons never saw there lead drop below double digits, and a contscious defensive effort continued to rattle the Pioneers. When the final buzzer sounded, the Falcons came away with a 78-66 win over Glenville State.
Miller finished the game with 19 points and five rebounds, while
Martha Nagbe recorded 20 and nine, respectively.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 10-6 overall, including 7-1 when playing at Murphy Gymnasium. The win also was the Falcons' fourth straight victory - all of which came against MEC opponents.
The Falcons will next compete on Thursday, Jan. 22 on the road against Urbana University.Â
