SALEM, Va. – The Notre Dame College softball team defeated Wheeling Jesuit University 8-0 in six innings in the first round of the Mountain East Conference tournament on Thursday afternoon in Salem Va.

The Falcons (23-28-1) who are the sixth seed in the tournament defeated the eleventh seeded Cardinals (16-32) courtesy of 12 hits and shut out performance from Ashley Hall (North Canton, Ohio, Hoover) on the mound. 

The Falcons opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a leadoff double from Kelsey Coleman (Suffield, Ohio, Field) followed by a double to left field from Maria Vanadia (Medina, Ohio, Medina HS).  NDC doubled their lead in the second inning as Christine Camp (Sterling, Ohio, Loudonville) crossed the plate. Camp was hit by a pitch and then progressed to second on a sac bunt from Kayla Sidorski (Eastlake, Ohio, Willoughby South) before stealing third and then scoring on an error by the Cardinals Catcher. 

The Falcons would explode for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 7-0. Nataly Ciocca (Macedonia, Ohio, Nordonia HS), Camp and Sidorski all reached to load the bases. Alex McKinley (Mantua, Ohio, Crestwood HS) would single up the middle to score Cavallero, a single to left field from Coleman would score Camp,  a Vanadia single to right field would score Nataly Ciocca (Macedonia, Ohio, Nordonia HS), who was pinch running for Mckinley and a sac fly from Anissa Kotoch (Willoughby Hills, Ohio, Kent State University) would score Coleman to complete the four run inning. 

NDC completed the run rule victory in the bottom of the sixth inning as a Kotoch single to left field to score Rachelle Miller (New Castle, Pa. , Mohawk) and give the Falcons an 8-0 victory. On the mound Hall pitched her fourth shutout of the season as she went the distance for the Falcons. 

NDC were led by their 1-3 batters, Coleman, Miller and Vanadia, who went a combined 7 for 11 at the plate. 

With the win the Falcons advance to the second round of the tournament, where they will face the third seed Fairmont State Fighting Falcons at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday May 1.
