Falcon Softball Split In Battle Of The Falcons

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The Notre Dame College Falcon softball team split a double header with the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons, Saturday afternoon on Duvall Rosier Field, in Mountain East Conference play. NDC (13-16, 6-4 MEC) took the first game 10-6 before Fairmont (14-8, 5-3 MEC) claimed the second 4-3.

Nicole Spuhler opened the scoring for NDC in the top of the first with a solo home run to left center. Jessica Cavallero then followed suit in the top of the second, with a solo home run to center field to give NDC a 2-0 lead.

NDC took a commanding lead in the third inning, exploding for seven runs from four hits. Kelsey Coleman opened the inning with a single to center field and then stole second to get into scoring position. Rachelle Miller would bring Coleman home, after forcing an error. Spuhler would single to right field, before Anissa Kotoch singled to left field to score Miller. A Maria Vanadia single to right center would score Spuhler and Fairmont were forced to make a pitching change. NDC would score one further run in the innings and lead 9-0 after three.

Fairmont pulled two runs back in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh, but NDC would add one in the top of the sixth on a Vanadia double to claim a 10-6 victory. On the mound Mackenzie Wallace went the distance for NDC , striking out four batters, to claim her fourth win of the season.

The second game of the day was dominated by the pitchers early on as both teams remained scoreless until the sixth inning. For NDC Ashley Hall did not allow a hit or a walk through the first five innings.

NDC would open the scoring in the top of the sixth courtesy of a Christine Camp single and then a Kelsey Coleman home run, her fifth of the season.  Fairmont, however would score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 4-2.NDC would add one run in the seventh but it wasn't enough as Fairmont claimed a 4-3 victory.

NDC will continue their West Virginian road swing with a double header at Shepherd on Sunday April 5, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
