CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame College men's basketball team fell 107-86 in the second round of the Mountain East Conference basketball tournament to the No.3 West Liberty Hilltoppers at the Charleston Civic Center on Friday evening.
The Falcons (11-19, 8-15 MEC) were unable to repeat their 89-87 victory over the Hilltoppers (25-2, 21-2 MEC) earlier in the season as West Liberty produced an impressive shooting display.
Two
Lawrence DeArmond free throws gave the Falcons a 5-4 lead at the 17:09 mark. West Liberty, however would claim a 28-19 lead with 9:14 remaining in the first half. The Falcons would put together a 6-0 run between 5:48 and 4:52 capped by two
Tyree Gaiter free throws to trail 40-32. West Liberty would close out the half outscoring the Falcons 11-4 to claim a 51-38 lead at halftime.
Tyree Gaiter led all scorers in the first half with an impressive 21 points, going 7 for 11 from the field.
West Liberty started the second half fast and had claimed a commanding 59-40 lead with 18:07 remaining. The Falcons to their credit fought back and a
Lawrence DeArmond three pointer cut the lead to 11, 67-56, with 14:29 remaining.
West Liberty, however would continue their impressive shooting performance, 62.5 percent from the field, to claim a 107-86 victory. With the win the Hilltoppers progress to the MEC Tournament semifinal to Face Glenville State.
The Falcons were led by
Lawrence DeArmond, who was honored in the pregame ceremonies as a first team All-MEC selection, who had 32 points.
Tyree Gaiter, who ended the season as the MEC leader in scoring, had 23 points.
The Hilltoppers were led Shawn Dyer who had 27 points and Kelvin Goodwin who had 24 points.
The game was the final outing in blue and white for three Falcon seniors;
Jarvis Huntley, Govonte Rose and
Patrick Koenig. The trio of seniors led the Falcons to their first Mountain East Conference tournament win and also the Falcons first victory over a No.1 ranked opponent, when the Falcons defeated the West Liberty 89-87 in January.
