DUE WEST, S.C. -- The Notre Dame Falcons secured their second victory in the last three days to finish a perfect trip down south, in a 12-10 win over Erskine.
For the Falcons (2-2) the victory was their second in a row and their second against Erskine since 2009, while for the Flying Fleet (3-3) the loss was their third in their last four games overall, and their second at home.
Erskine had a 1-0 lead early on, until
Madalyn Dewling tied things up at the 18:39-mark. Erskine's Ali Cole gave the Fighting Fleet a 2-1 advantage moments later, before
Kristen Hull caught fire and scored two goals in 44 seconds to give the Falcons their first lead of the contest.
Cole answered back for Erskine with a couple of quick strikes just moments later to give the Fighting Fleet a 4-3 advantage, but the Falcons kept them off the board through the final 10 minutes of the opening half.Â
NDC scored the final three goals of the opening period to take a 6-4 lead at the half. Hull scored her third goal of the opening period while
Shannan Edwards and
Kelly Matthewman found the back of the net as well in the final 10 minutes to add to the NDC advantage.
Notre Dame fired off five more shots (15-10) in the opening half, forced six of Erskine's 15 turnovers in the first period and capitalized on Erskine's struggles to clear early on, as the Fighting Fleet were successful on just half of their eight clearing attempts in the opening period.Â
As they had done two days earlier, the Falcons wasted no time getting to work in the second half. They scored four of the first five goals in the second period, and three of those came from
Brooke Czarnecki. Czarnecki's first goal came in a man-up situation after Erskine was tagged with a yellow card, her second came on an assist from Hull, and her third came on a free position shot to give NDC a 10-5 lead with 21:48 remaining.
Notre Dame went on to add another on a goal from Hull, to go up 11-5, taking their largest lead of the game, before Erskine made things interesting. The Fighting Fleet scored the next four goals over a 13 minute stretch to bring the deficit down to two (11-9) with a little over six minutes to play.Â
The Falcons were able to halt that run with 2:27 remaining, when Dewling scored her second goal of the contest, coming on an assist from Czarnecki to give NDC a 12-9 advantage, essentially putting the game way.
"Today's game was a hard and physical for these young ladies," said Head Coach
Claire Kallio. "Our goalie,
Lauren Ragsdale, was the glue to our defense. We had an extremely successful spring break and I'm glad we ended on a high note.
Five Falcons scored on the afternoon, with four Falcons scoring multiple times. Hull led the way with four goals in the contest, giving her seven on the trip down south, and she had 10 shots on goal. Czarnecki was next in line with three goals and an assist, while Dewling had another big game with a pair of goals and three assists. Edwards also found the back of the net twice.
"We really had to fight to win this game today," said Czarnecki. "If we wouldn't have played our hardest, the outcome could have been different."
The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, March 11, when they take on Lake Erie College in another road tilt. The contest is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
