Falcon Softball Split With Cardinals

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. — The Notre Dame College softball team split their Mountain East Conference double header with Wheeling Jesuit on Sunday. The Falcons (9-12, 3-1 MEC) dropped the first game 12-4 before bouncing back to defeat the Cardinals (7-14, 1-3 MEC) 7-6 in the second game.

Wheeling Jesuit took an early 2-0 lead in game one, before a three run second inning for NDC gave them a 3-2 lead. Maria Vanadia and Natalie Ciocca were both brought home on a Kelsey Coleman triple to tie the game at two. Rachelle Miller would then force an error to bring Coleman home to give the Falcons a 4-3 lead.

The Cardinals however would not allow another hit for the Falcons in the game and score 10 runs in the final three innings to claim a 12-4 win for the Cardinals in five innings.

The Falcons produced a much more complete performance in game two, led by Mackenzie Wallace on the mound who pitched a complete game.

NDC used a three run second inning to claim a 3-1 lead. Anissa Kotoch started the inning off with a double to left center and then scored on a throwing error. A Natalie Ciocca single to left field brought Nicole Spuhler home and Kelsey Coleman grounded out to bring Ciocca home for the third run.

The Falcons added a further run in the third as Jessica Cavallero, Kotoch and Spuhler all had hits to bring Cavallero home. In the top of the fourth Christine Camp had a lead off single and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Kelsey Coleman, before Lydia Coccitto singled to left center to bring Camp home. Both the Falcons and Cardinals went scoreless in the fifth and NDC led 5-2 heading into the final two innings.

Christine Camp showed good speed with a lead off single off a bunt in the top of the sixth. Kelsey Coleman then continued her impressive week at the plate with her second home run of the week to give the Falcons a 7-2 lead. The Cardinals would fight back scoring two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings but the Falcons would hold on to claim a 7-6 victory.

The Falcons will continue Mountain East Conference Play on Wednesday March 26. with a double header at Urbana.
