SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — The Notre Dame College softball team played their first home games of the season and their first home games on their new turf field, Normandy Field, on Thursday afternoon.
Prior to the chilly double bill against the visiting flyers from Lewis University, the ceremonial first pitches were thrown out by Notre Dame College President Andrew. P. Roth, Director of Athletics
Scott Swain and Faculty Athletic Representative Roslyn Scheer-McLeod.
In the first game of the day the Flyer took an early 1-0 lead a the top of the first. Junior
Kelsey Coleman however, would answer immediately for the Falcons with a lead off home run in the bottom of the first to score the first home run on Normandy Field.
Lewis would add two runs in both the second and third innings to lead 5-1 as the Falcons went to bat in the third. A lead off triple from
Kelsey Coleman to right field would put her in scoring position and she would score off of a throwing error. The Falcons were unable to create any further scoring and three further runs for the Flyers secured an 8-2 victory for the visitors.
The second game of the day Lewis rushed out to a 5-0 after their first two innings. The Falcons pulled a run back in the bottom of the second after some smart running from
Jessica Cavallero and a
Christine Camp single. Both Lewis and NDC would score twice in the third inning, the Falcons runs coming courtesy of singles from
Lydia Coccitto and
Sarah Depp and a
Jessica Cavallero double.
The Flyers, however would score three times in the fourth to lead 10-2. The Falcons would pull one run back in the fifth and two in the sixth, before the game was called after the sixth inning due to poor light conditions, and the Flyers claimed a 10-6 victory.
Kelsey Coleman was the standout for the Falcons on the day going 5 for 6 to complete a full cycle over the two games, with a home run and triple in the first game and a single and double in the second game.
With the two losses on the day the Falcons drop to 6-11. The Falcons will return to action this weekend as they open Mountain East Conference play at West Liberty on Saturday March 22. in a double header and then play Wheeling Jesuit in a double header on Sunday March 23.
