Falcons drop second straight overtime game

Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons lost to the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons  by a final score of 100-94 on Senior Night where all three of their senior players were recognized prior to the game.

With the loss NDC (9-18, 7-14 MEC) has now lost seven straight. For Fairmont State(18-9, 13-8), who have now played in back-to-back overtime games, improves to 4-3 in their last 7 contests. FSU needs one more win to clinch a first round bye in the Mountain East Conference tournament.

Fairmont State set the pace with an early 14-4 run to go take a 14-6 advantage with 15:15 remaining. Neither team was able to go on another long run throughout the first minutes in the closely contested first half.

A three point basket by Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson cut the deficit to one, 21-20 with 8:19 remaining in the first half, as the Falcons finished a 7-2 run. The Fighting Falcons then extended the lead to 26-20 before Figueroa-Jackson hit another three.

With 4:40 remaining, the blue and white pulled to within one again, 26-25. With 1:38 remaining, the Falcons of Notre Dame took their first lead since the 19:04 mark, 31-28 on a pair of dunks by Geovonte Rose and Lawrence DeArmond.

At the half Notre Dame led Fairmont St by a score of 33-30.

NDC shot 50-percent (12-for-24) from the field and 40-percent (2-for-5) from three point territory. The blue and white also shot 87.5-percent (7-for-8) from the free throw line. FSU shot 33.3-percent (12-for-36) from the field and 33.3-percent (4-for-12) from long range in the first half.

DeArmond led the Falcons in scoring with eight points, shooting 42.9-percent (3-for-7) from the field. Chase Morgan of Fairmont St. led all scorers with 12 points, shooting field goals at 50-percent (4-for-8) all coming from behind the arc.

NDC took their largest lead at the 17:53 mark when they went up 37-32. The Falcons shooting barrage continued, a 10-2 run coming out of the half that put the Falcons up 43-32 with 16:20 to go in the second half.

The momentum shifted to the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons as they clawed their way back into the game, cutting the Falcons lead to one, 54-53 with 9:40 remaining in the second half.

Fairmont State finally broke through and retook the lead at 62-59 with 6:53 left in the second half on a Chase Morgan three pointer. But with 5:38 remaining, a Tyree Gaiter layup put the blue and white back up 63-62.

The game continued to go back and forth with the lead bouncing between both teams. The Fighting Falcons went on a 4-0 run to tie the game 72 with 1:29 to go on a pair of Caleb Davis free throws. FSU took control of the game at the 49-second mark, 75-74.

With NDC down 77-74 with 22 seconds remaining, Gaiter hit a fade away three to tie the game at 77. Thomas Wimbush could not sink the game winner at the buzzer to win the game in regulation.

In overtime, Brendon Cooper hit shots on back-to-back possessions to put the Fighting Falcons up 81-77. Jarvis Huntley's layup brought Notre Dame within two, 81-79, FSU then went on a 5-0 run to go back up 86-79.

Notre Dame came up empty on consecutive possessions, but Fairmont State could not put the game away at the line. The Fighting Falcons did eventually expand the lead with the largest lead in overtime coming with 41.8 seconds remaining, 92-81.

It was a game of fouls in the final minute, with NDC fouling a Fighting Falcon every time they touched the ball. The Falcons did not give up, and slowly worked their way to a four point deficit. But ultimately the FSU offense was able to put the game away.

NDC shot 52.9-percent (36-for-68) from the field and 47.1-percent (8-for-17) from the three point arc. They also shot a stifling 87.5-percent (14-for-16) from the free throw line. Fairmont State shot 41-percent (32-for-78) from the field, including 45-percent (9-for-20) from the three point arc and 73-percent (27-for-37) from the charity stripe.

Gaiter led the Falcons with 25 points (11-for-22), Huntley finished with 24 (10-for-14) and DeArmond had 20 points (7-for-14). Stevie Browning led FSU with 31 points (11-for-18) and rebounds, 13. Cooper had 25 points (9-for-20) and Morgan had 24 points (7-for-14), including shooting 53.8-percent (7-for-13) from behind the three point arc.

The Falcons are in action on Mar. 1, at Urbana University for their final game of the season. The game is scheduled to tip at 3 pm.
