Falcons Fall 73-65 in Overtime at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. - The Notre Dame College women's basketball team fell to an overtime 73-65 defeat to West Virginia State on Thursday evening at Fleming Hall in Mountain East Conference play.

A Lauren Langenderfer layup gave the Falcons (13-10, 10-9 MEC) an early 9-6 lead at 14:57 point of the first half before the Yellow Jackets (16-9, 12-7 MEC) went on a 9-0 run to claim a 15-9 lead at 12:01 mark. The Falcons, however would respond with an 8-2 run capped by a Courtney Clark three-pointer to tie the game, 17-17, with 7:20 remaining in the first half. Clark would hit her second three-pointer of the game with 4:49 remaining in the first half to give the Falcons a 24-23 lead. The Falcons closed out the first half with an 8-0 run to claim a 34-26 lead at half time.

NDC continued their strong run to start the second half, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 11-4 to claim a 15 point lead, 45-30, with 15:42 remaining. West Virginia State narrowed the lead to 45-38 at the 13:13 mark, but the Falcons would respond and led 54-41with 8:14 remaining. The Yellow Jackets would not go away and tied the game, 62-62 with 0:57 remaining. The game would remain tied through the final minute and finished 62-62, despite a final second 75-foot attempt from Martha Nagbe that banked off the backboard and the front of the rim.

In overtime the Falcons lead 65-64 with 3:44 remaining before the Yellow Jackets scored 9 unanswered points to claim a 73-65 victory.

NDC were led by sophomore guard Martha Nagbe, who finished with a game high 26 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals to record her fourth double double of the season. Joining Nagbe in double digits were senior guard Courtney Clark and sophomore guard Lauren Langenderfer, who each had 13 points. In addition to her 13 point Langenderfer pulled in 11 rebounds to record her first double double of the year.

As a team, the Falcons came away with a season-high 13 blocks, the most since they registered seven against the Yellow Jackets at home.

West Virginia State was led by Lexy Carson and India Taste, who each had 17 points.

The Falcons will remain in southern West Virginia, where they will take on the University of Charleston on Saturday March 22 at 2 p.m.
