Falcon shooters catch fire in win over Concord

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons used a terrific shooting performance on Saturday evening to defeat Concord, 86-72, at Murphy Gymnasium.

For the Falcons (8-11, 6-7 MEC) the victory was their third in their last four games, and their second in a row, marking the first time this season that they've won games consecutively, while the loss for the Mountain Lions (6-14, 3-11) was their 11th in their last 12 games, and drops their road record to 0-10.

Picking up where they left off after their huge upset victory over No. 1 West Liberty two nights earlier, the Falcons shot the lights out.  They made 56.4-percent (31-for-55) of their shots on the night, including an incredible 50.0-percent (11-for-22) clip from beyond the arc.

The early stages of the game saw both teams take modest leads, as they both shot the ball well above 50.0-percent to start the contest.  Neither side would take a lead larger than four over the first 14 minutes of the game.

Notre Dame held a slight 3-point edge (39-36) with 2:52 to play in the opening half, before burying their final three shots of the half inside the last three minutes to cap an 8-1 run, giving them a 47-39 lead at the break.  The aforementioned 8-1 run was capped by Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson's 3-pointer, one of five that he hit in the opening half.

Figueroa-Jackson paced the NDC offense in the opening half, as he was lights out from beyond the arc, getting all 15 of his first half points on 3-balls, shooting  83.3-percent (5-for-6) from long distance.

NDC shot the ball extremely well in the first half, hitting on all five of their free throws, they hit on 17 (58.6-percent) of their 29 shots from the floor and they shot 61.5-percent (8-for-13) from beyond the arc.

Concord also shot the ball well in the opening stanza, hitting 57.1-percent (16-for-28) of their shots from the floor, but found themselves behind by eight because they were not able to find an answer for NDC's long distance attack.

The sharp shooting continued for NDC on the second stanza, as they never let up.  They hit four out of their first five shots in the second half, as their lead quickly reached double digits, and the game was never really in question the rest of the way.

Concord came within seven (64-57) with 10:21 to play after Cam Shannon's jumper, but that was as close as they would get through the remainder of the contest.

Notre Dame shot 53.8-percent (14-for-26) from the floor in the second half, and hit 80.0-percent (8) of their 10 free throws.  The 3-pointers would not fall for Concord in the second half, as they made just 1-of-11 (9.1-percent) of their shots from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.

Four Falcons scored in double figures, and Tyree Gaiter led the way with 24 points to go along with six assists.  Figueroa-Jackson added 20 on the strength of an 85.7-percent (6-for-7) shooting performance from 3-point land.  Lawrence DeArmond added 16 points, to go along with seven assists, and Geovonte Rose scored 12 points while adding eight rebounds and three blocks.

The Falcons are in action again on Monday, Feb. 3, when they play host to Virginia-Wise at Murphy Gymnasium.  Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
