Nagbe's 33 points leads NDC to win over Wheeling Jesuit

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College women's basketball team returned home to Murphy Gymnasium on Saturday to face the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals ain a Mountain East Conference showdown. The Falcons used the home crowd to their advantage and were led by 33 points from Martha Nagbe, winning a back-and-forth battle over WJU, 78-73.

The Cardinals came out firing and took a 7-0 lead over NDC just two minutes into the game. However, that lead didn't last long as the Falcons rallied back with an 11-3 run to take an 11-10 lead early in the first half.

The narrow score would be a trend throughout the entirety of the game, as the Falcons and Cardinals proved to be two evenly matched teams.

The Falcons pushed their lead to seven, 28-21, after a 3-pointer from Alyssa Kraus, assisted by Nagbe. With just 1:33 remaining in the first half, a pair of Cardinals free throws cut NDC's lead to just one, 34-33.

Nagbe then heated up quickly and responded with back-to-back threes to push the lead to seven again, 40-33. However, WJU closed the half on a 4-0 run to bring NDC's lead to within one possession, 40-37, at halftime.

Three minutes into the second half, the Cardinals stormed back to take a 46-44 lead, but Nagbe again stepped up and tied the game with a lay up, assisted by Molly Ritz.

The narrow battled continued and the Cardinals again took the lead - this time 57-54 - but Nagbe refused to miss, again tying the game with yet another 3-pointer. Both found themselves tied at 57 with just 9:05 remaining in the game.

Neither side could pull away from the other, and both sides were tied at 69 with just 1:55 remaining in regulation.

A pair of Nagbe free throws was matched by a Cardinals jumper, tying the game at 71. Kraus hit two free throws, and Nagbe tacked on two more, and NDC led 75-71 with 1:06 remaining.

The Cardinals attemped to fight back, but late free throws from Nagbe sealed the win for NDC as the Falcons beat the Cardinals 78-73.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-4 on the season, including 2-2 in MEC play. The Falcons will next play on Friday, Dec. 12 on the road against Tiffin University.

Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
