Box Score Box ScoreCLEVELAND, Ohio -- Playing on Thanksgiving weekend, the Notre Dame College women's basketball team stayed local as they made the short journey to downtown Cleveland on Saturday afternoon to play the Division I Cleveland State Vikings at the Wolstein Center. The Falcons rallied to take a halftime lead, but fell short against a talented Vikings team in the second half, losing by a final score of 83-67.
NDC stuck with CSU in the early going after
Kelsey Miller nailed a jumper to make the score 10-7 CSU, forcing a Vikings timeout. Out of the timeout, the Vikings went on a 17-7 run over the next six minutes to take a 27-14 with 8:20 remaining in the first half.
And then the Falcons found a spark.
After a CSU foul, Miller drained a pair of free throws, and a steal by
Martha Nagbe turned into another bucket from Miller, trimming the deficit to 27-18.
The Falcons called a timeout after forcing another defensive stop and subbed
Erin Haislah into the game. Less than 20 seconds later, Haislah nailed her first collegiate 3-pointer to add to NDC's run, cutting CSU's lead to just six.
The run didn't stop there for NDC, as a team effort led to the Falcons clawing back and eventually taking the lead, 31-30, after another basket from Miller.
CSU would regain the lead at 35-32, but the Falcons used a pair of Haislah free throws to go into halftime on a 4-0 run and, taking a 36-35.Â
In the second half, the Vikings stormed out of the gate with a 15-5 run, taking a 50-41 lead with 15:13 remaining. Five minutes later with 10:12 remaining, a
Torie McDuffie lay up cut the deficit to just nine again, 60-51.
The Falcons put up a hard-fought effort throughout the remainder of the game, but a 17-point second half from CSU's Alexis Eckles proved to be too much as NDC fell by a final score of 83-67.
With the loss, the Falcons sit at 2-3 on the season and will next play on Thursday, Dec. 4 at West Liberty University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
