Falcons fall victim to red hot Bobcat shooters

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons fell at home for the first time in nearly a month, as they dropped a 90-80 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan at Murphy Gymnasium on Thursday evening.

For the Falcons (4-8, 2-4 MEC), the loss was their second in their last three games, and just their third at home this season, while the victory for the Bobcats (9-6, 4-3) was their fourth in their last five games, and second in their last three on the road.

All night long, the Bobcats were on point, and shot the lights out.  It began with an early 3-point shooting barrage from T.J. Thompson, who buried a trio of trifectas over the first five minutes of the game, scoring 13 of WV Wesleyan's first 18 points, as they took an 18-8 advantage a little over five minutes in.

The lead grew to 13 (23-10) for the Bobcats at the 12:42-mark after another 3-pointer from Thompson, before the Falcons responded with a 10-2 run over the next four minutes, which was capped by Lawrence DeArmond's old fashioned 3-point play, to bring the Falcons within five (25-20).

Notre Dame shot the ball well over the final eight minutes of the first half, but that was only enough to keep pace with the Bobcats, who could not miss.  Both teams shot the ball well in the opening stanza, with WV Wesleyan shooting 53.3-percent (16-for-30) from the field, including a 46.2-percent (6-for-13) mark from 3-point land, while the Falcons shot an even 50.0-percent (13-for-26) in the first half.

The Falcons chipped away at the Wesleyan lead in the early goings of the second half, trailing by two on multiple occasions, and eventually tied the game at 59-59, with 13:51-remaining, as Tyree Gaiter nailed a pair of free throws.

Over the next minute of the contest, the Bobcats scored six straight points to regain control and they would maintain the lead through the rest of the contest.

The Bobcats shot a blistering 57.6-percent (34-for-59) from the floor on the night, and used a 41-27 rebounding advantage to come away with the win.

Four Falcons scored in double figures on the evening, and Gaiter led the way with 27.  He was also NDC's leading rebounder with six, and added five assists.  DeArmond added 18, while going 8-for-9 (88.9-percent) from the free throw line. Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson added 11, while Geovonte Rose added 13 points, and grabbed five offensive rebounds.

The Falcons are in action again in Saturday, Jan. 11, when they hit the road to take on West Virginia State, in Institute, W.Va.  Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
