SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Martha Nagbe hit a three-pointer with 0:06 seconds left on the clock to give the Notre Dame College women's basketball team a pulsating 82-81 victory over the Shepherd University Rams and to start 2014 in winning fashion.
The Falcons (7-2) trailed by as many as 14 points before fighting back to claim their only lead of the game in the final second.
The Rams started quickly, claiming a 15-6 lead on the back of three three-pointers and would push on to claim their largest lead of the game, 32-18 with 14:44 remaining in the first half. The Falcons would fight their way back in to the game with an 11-3 point run between the 7 and 2 minute marks to trail 37-35 at the 2:00 minute mark. Shepherd held a 41-38 lead at the end of the first half.
Shepherd would again start strongly in the second half securing a 10-point lead, 56-46 with 15:25 remaining. The Falcons responded well and tied the game 60-60 with 8:57 remaining. The game would remain tight from this point and with 9 seconds remaining the Falcons trailed 81-79.
Martha Nagbe would take the ball in transition before pulling up to shoot a three-pointer with 0:06 seconds remaining to claim the victory for the Falcons.
The Falcons were led in scoring by senior
Erin Entinghe who had a game-high 22 points. Joining Entinghe in double digits were
Martha Nagbe and
Courtney Clark who had 17 and 15 points respectively. Entinghe and Nagbe also led the Falcons in rebounds with 8 and 7 rebounds respectively. Nagbe also added 6 steals for the Falcons to go with her game winning three-pointer.
Shepherd were led by Gabby Flinchum and Cara Mason who each had 18 points.
The Falcons held a 48-40 advantage in rebounds and shot 37.2 percent from 78 attempts.
With the win the Falcons move to 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in Mountain East Conference play. The win starts a period in which will play 5 games in 9 days including two games at "The Murph" this week. They take on the Falcons from Fairmont State on Monday Jan. 6 at 5:30 p.m. and then the Bobcats from West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday Jan. 9 at 5:30 p.m.
