WHEELING, W.Va. –
Martha Nagbe scored 20 points to lead the Notre Dame College women's basketball team to a 57-52 victory over Wheeling Jesuit University in Mountain East Conference play at the McDonough Center.
The win, improves the Falcons' record to 9-6 overall, 6-5 in MEC play and an even 3-3 away from home. WJU falls to 7-9 overall and 4-8 in the MEC.
The Falcons opened the game with an 8-0 run after
Martha Nagbe and
Erin Entinghe knocked down a pair of three-pointers. The Cardinals then put together a 21-7 run to claim their largest lead of the game (21-15) with 8:24 remaining in the first. NDC would however claim a 28-25 lead by halftime after outscoring the WJU 13-4 to close out the half.
With 12:14 remaining the Cardinals tied the game at 37-37 and the lead went back and forth between the teams until the 3:02 mark when a jumper from
Martha Nagbe gave the Falcons a lead they would not give up. The Falcons closed out the final minutes hitting their free throws to claim a 57-52 victory.
In addition to her 20 points
Martha Nagbe had 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal.
Lauren Langenderfer had 9 points and 6 rebounds.
Erin Entinghe had 8 points and
Alyssa Kraus had 6 points. Freshman
Kelsey Miller had a game high 12 rebounds to go with her 6 points.
For the game, the Falcons owned advantages over Wheeling in steals (11-9), rebounds (46-31), and field goal percentage (36.4-32.1).
NDC shot 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the foul line and held WJU to just 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field and 14.3 percent (2-of-14) from three-point range.
Wheeling Jesuit was led by Jaila Bryant, who finished with 12 points.
With the win the Falcons complete a season double over the Cardinals having beaten them 81-70 at Murphy Gymnasium in December.
"I'm glad we were able to play through tough possessions and make some positive decisions on both ends of the court," said Head Coach
Katie Hine. "We saw some key players come off the bench tonight in
Kelsey Miller and
Lauren Langenderfer to ignite some things for us."
The Falcons will stay on the road when they travel back to Wheeling on Thursday (Jan.30) to take on West Liberty at 5:30 p.m.
