GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- The Falcons played their first road game in nearly a month on Saturday afternoon, and fell to Glenville State, 88-73.
For the Falcons (5-10, 3-6 MEC), the loss was their third in their last four games, and was their third in a row away from home, while for the Pioneers (9-5, 6-4), victory was their fourth in five games at home, and their third in their last four games overall.
The Falcons started out red hot, as they buried 75.0-percent (6) of their first eight shots from the floor over the first four minutes of the contest, and took their largest lead of the game after
Tyree Gaiter hit a jumper at the 15:50-mark, giving the Falcons a 15-9 advantage.Â
However, NDC went ice cold after Gaiter's big bucket, as they were held without a basket for the next three and a half minutes, which allowed the Pioneers to battle back.Â
The game was tied at 18-18, with 11:50 remaining, when the Pioneers stole the momentum. Glenville State went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes, and they shot buried 71.4-percent (5) of their seven shots from the field during that stretch to take a commanding, 32-18 lead.Â
Notre Dame never recovered. Glenville State's lead grew as large as 16 on multiple occasions, and while the Falcons were able to narrow the deficit to 10 a few times, they couldn't trim it to single digits as the Pioneers took a 45-33 lead at the half.
Glenville State shot 56.3-percent (18-for-32) in the first half of action, while grabbing 21 rebounds including six on the offensive end. Notre Dame hit on 43.3-percent (13-30) of their shots from the floor in the first half, and got 13 points from
Lawrence DeArmond.Â
Unfortunately for the Falcons, the second half didn't offer much relief. The Falcons missed their first four shots in the second half, which allowed the Pioneers to trigger a 14-2 run. The aforementioned run gave the Pioneers a 59-35 advantage just four minutes into the half.
NDC was able to dig in at times with a few modest runs to try and get back within striking distance, but they were never able to trim GSC's lead to single digits, as the Pioneers closed out with the victory.
The Falcons had a tough time filling it up, as they shot just 38.5-percent (25-for-65) from the floor, and they hit on just 20.0-percent (3) of their 15 3-pointers on the afternoon.
A trio of Falcons scored in double figures, and it was DeArmond who led the way with 24 points, on the strength of a perfect 8-for-8 performance from the charity stripe. Gaiter added 14 points for the Falcons with four assists, and
Jarvis Huntley contributed with 10 points and six rebounds.
The Falcons are in action again on Thursday, Jan. 23, when they play host to Urbana at Murphy Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.Â
