SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio — The Notre Dame College women's basketball team dropped their first home game of the season falling 80-74 to the visiting Yellow Jackets from West Virginia State.
In game that was scheduled to be played at West Virginia State but was moved to Murphy Gymnasium due to a dangerous chemical leak in the Charleston, W.Va., area, the Falcons were unable to produce another come from behind victory.
The Yellow Jackets started the game strongly and claimed a 29-15 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The Falcons however would close out the half stronger but trailed 45-37 at halftime.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with West Virginia State outscoring the Falcons early on to claim their biggest lead of the game, 66-46, with 11:49 remaining. The Falcons would respond once again and outscore the Yellow Jackets 28-14 from that point on. The Falcons pulled to within 2 with 1:52 remaining at 76-74 but were unable to claim the victory as the Yellow Jackets closed out the game to claim an 80-74 victory.
Martha Nagbe produced another fine performance despite the loss scoring 27 points and claiming 8 rebounds. In addition to Nage,
Molly Ritz provided a double double for the Falcons scoring 18 points and pulling in 12 rebounds in what was statistically her best performance of the season.
West Virginia State were led by Asia Greenleaf and Lexi Carson who had 22 and 18 points respectively.
The Falcons out rebounded the Yellow Jackets 45-41 but were out shot by the Yellow Jackets who shot 47.1 percent compared to the Falcons 38 percent.
With the loss the Falcons fall to 8-3 on the season, 5-2 in Mountain East Conference play and are now 6-1 at home this season. The Falcons will return to Murphy Gymnasium on Monday Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m. to take on the Golden Eagles from the University of Charleston.
