SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons passed the century mark for the third time this season, as they made 31 free throws on Saturday afternoon to defeat West Virginia State, 103-99, at Murphy Gymnasium.
For the Falcons (5-8, 3-4 MEC), the victory was their second in their last three games overall, and their third in their last four at home, while the loss for the Yellow Jackets (5-6, 2-6) Â was just their second in their last six games.
Both teams shot the ball pretty well all night long, and both teams were able to get to the free throw line with ease, as the two teams combined to shoot 68 free throws.
There wasn't much separation between the two on the scoreboard over the first three and a half minutes of the game, until NDC triggered an 11-2 run, on
Jarvis Huntley's layup at the 16:20-mark. NDC ended the aforementioned run on a
Lawrence DeArmond 3-pointer to give the Falcons an 18-8 lead with 13:55 left in the half, marking the largest lead of the opening stanza.Â
The Yellow Jackets clawed back into the contest, and eventually tied the game at 32-32, with 4:56 left in the first half, but Notre Dame responded with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, which was capped by
Tyree Gaiter's 3-pointer. NDC went into halftime with a 46-40 advantage.
WV State caught fire from the floor in the second half, as they hit 62.5-percent (20-for-32) of their shots in the second stanza. While they were able to knock down a lot of shots, they were only able to take one lead in the second half. Dominic Phillips hit a pair of free throws to give the Yellow Jackets a 78-77 lead with 6:35 to play.
DeArmond responded with a layup on NDC's next possession to give the Falcons the lead, and started a 13-2 run over the next two minutes to give the Falcons a 90-80 advantage. The Yellow Jackets could only draw within three the rest of the way as the Falcons closed out the victory.
Four Falcons scored in double figures, and DeArmond led the way with 28. Gaiter wasn't far behind with 26, while shooting 91.6-percent (11-for-12) at the charity stripe, and had a double-double with 10 assists.
Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson had 17 points, Huntley added 17 on a perfect 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line, while
Geovonte Rose led the Falcons on the glass with 12 rebounds.
NDC shot 72.1-percent (31-for-43) from the line on the night, while the Yellow Jackets hit on 88.0-percent (22-for-25) of their free throws.
The Falcons are in action again on Monday, Jan. 13, when they play host to Charleston (W.Va.) at Murphy Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
