SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons remain unbeaten at home after a double header sweep over Mercyhurst at Campus Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Falcons (11-11) have now won seven out of their last eight games, and they've won six in a row oveerall. The Lakers (12-20) saw a two game winning streak come to a close with the losses.
Notre Dame held off a late Mercyhurst rally to take the first contest, 6-4, and outlasted the Lakers in the second game, to come away with a 3-2 victory in nine innings.
Game One
NDC snapped a scoreless tie by scoring three times on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. The inning began with back-to-back singles from
Nicole Spuhler and
Jessica Bequette.
Megan Turner drove in the first run on a base hit down the line in left, and
Rachelle Miller followed with a two run single to center.
Miller struck again for NDC, with her second of three hits in the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning, with an RBI single to center which scored
Christine Camp. The Lakers were able to get on the board by scoring a single run in the sixth inning, but NDC answered with a pair in the home half.
This time it was
Jessica Cavallero who came through with a single to left center which plated
Lindsay Carmean, and
Christine Kasidonis followed with a base hit through the left side of the infield to score Miller.
The Lakers put together a three-run rally in the top of the seventh inning to make things interesting, but
Ashley Harbarger (5-2) was able to finish the job and secure the victory. Harbarger went the distance, and allowed four runs, three earned on six hits while fanning seven in a winning effort.
Game Two
The Falcons struck first again in the second contest, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. They capitalized on a string of four straight singles, a sequence that was capped by
Kelsey Coleman's RBI base hit which scored Miller.
Courtney Smith stroked an RBI single in the top of the third inning for Mercyhurst to tie the game at 1-1, before Notre Dame answered just a half inning later to regain the lead. Miller started the inning with a base hit, and she was driven in by Coleman's two-bagger moments later.
Shaina Bunker homered for the Lakers in the top of the sixth inning to tie things up at 2-2, until Notre Dame won the game in walk off fashion in the bottom of the ninth. With the bases loaded, Bequette shot a single through the right side of the infield to score
Kayla Sidorski.
Mackenzie Wallace (3-4) went the distance for the Falcons, allowing just a pair of runs on eight hits through nine solid innings to score the victory.
Miller paced the Falcons at the plate, going 6-for-8 with a trio of runs scored and she drove in three as well. Coleman also had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-8 with two runs batted in.
The Falcons are in action again on Wednesday, April 10, when they host Ohio Dominican at Campus Field. The first contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
