Falcons sweep Malone in home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons won a pair of games in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Malone, 6-0 and 10-1.

The Falcons (9-11) were red hot offensively, despite the freezing cold temperature at game time.  NDC tallied 16 runs on 15 hits, and have now won five out of their last six. The Pioneers (6-14) have now lost 13 in a row since starting the year with six straight wins.

The Falcons scored a pair of runs in three separate innings in the first game, while Ashley Harbarger (4-2) held the Pioneers in check.  NDC scored twice in the bottom of the second to take the early advantage.  Christine Kasidonis and Kelsey Coleman both reached on singles, and they both came home on Jessica Bequette's base hit.

NDC plated two more in the third.  Megan Turner started the inning on a triple down the left field line, and Rachelle Miller reached on a fielder's choice.  Both Turner and Miller touched home plate moments later on Jessica Cavallero's double to left center.

Notre Dame added two more in the home half of the sixth inning, on run scoring singles from both Turner and Kayla Sidorski

Harbarger went the distance in game one and blanked the Pioneers.  She allowed just four hits in the contest and fanned 10 in the process.

The Falcons used a huge seven run rally in the first inning of game two to take a commanding lead.  They eventually won via the mercy rule in five innings.  NDC capitalized on a number of Pioneer errors, which assisted in NDC's huge first inning.  Coleman walked with the bases loaded to score the first run, and Bequette followed with an RBI single.  Two more runs came across as Amanda Arendt reached on an error, and two more crossed home plate when Christine Camp reached on an errant t throw.  Turner knocked in the final run of the inning on a single.

Bequette struck again for NDC in the bottom of the second inning, when she smashed a one out single back up the middle to score two more runs, and Arendt followed with a run scoring base hit to plate NDC's final run.

Ashley Hall (3-4) came away with the win in the second game.  She surrendered just a run on five hits, and struck out six over five solid innings.

Bequette led the way for NDC offensively, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and five runs batted in.  Turner had four hits on the day, two in each contest, as she went 4-for-7 with a run scored and two RBI.

The Falcons are in action again on Thursday, April 9, when they host Mercyhurst (Pa.) at Campus Field. The first contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
