Falcons endure 17 inning marathon, split with Walsh

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons outlasted Walsh in a 17 inning contest to take game one of their double header, 1-0, but fell in Wednesday evening's finale to the Cavaliers, 8-0.

The split for the Falcons (13-15) puts their overall road record at 4-3, while the split for the Cavaliers (15-15) snapped a four game losing streak.

It was Ashley Harbarger's arm, and Kelsey Coleman's bat that ultimately pushed the Falcons over the top in their 17 inning victory in game one, before the Cavaliers capitalized on a six run third inning to take game two.

Game One

The opening contest was completely dominated by pitching.  The starting hurlers, Harbarger (6-5) and Casi Rohr blanked opposing bats for 16 consecutive innings, while only 10 hits were recorded during the first 13 innings.

Both teams had plenty of chances to score.  Walsh squandered opportunities in the third and fourth inning, where they left runners stranded in scoring position, and Notre Dame had the bases loaded with one down in the sixth inning, but couldn't push any runs across. The Falcons came up empty handed in another bases loaded situation in the seventh inning as well.

The pitching just got stronger as the game progressed into extra innings.  Neither offense was able to put much of a threat together, as the two teams combined to record just three hits in innings 8-13.

Harbarger entered the 17th inning with a 1-0 lead, thanks to Kelsey Coleman's bomb, which counted for the only run of the contest. The homer, Coleman's first of the season was deposited over the wall in center.

The Cavaliers had the tying run at second base, when the game ended.  Harbarger lasted all 17 innings, holding the Cavaliers to just 11 hits during that stretch with a trio of strikeouts.

Game Two

Notre Dame ran out of gas in the second game, as they fell, 8-0.  Walsh did most of their damage in the third inning, where they scored six times on five hits and capitalized on a couple of costly NDC errors to pull away.

NDC was held hitless in the second contest by Walsh's Erin Ebert, who allowed just one base runner in the contest.  Ashley Hall (3-5) took the loss, after surrendering six runs, three earned on seven hits over 2.1 innings of work.

Coleman and Spuhler led the way offensively for NDC, with two hits each.

The Falcons are in action again on Sunday, April 21, when they hit the road for a double header against Northwood (Mich.). The first contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
