KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Notre Dame Falcons played in two more close games on Saturday afternoon, but fell in a pair of one run games, to both Wayne State and St. Cloud State on their final day of action at the Rebel Spring Games.
The Falcons (4-10) have now lost six in a row, including four consecutive one-run losses. NDC was blanked in the opener, 1-0, against Wayne State (Mich.), and they fell in extra innings in their second contest, dropping a 3-2 decision in eight innings against St. Cloud State (Minn.).
For the second day in a row, the pitching was very good for NDC. Only three pitchers entered the circle for Head Coach
Amy Kyler, including
Mackenzie Wallace who suffered a hard luck loss in the opener.
Both teams tallied four hits in game one, but it was Wayne State's Stephanie Foreman who had the biggest of them all, with a solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning with two outs, producing the game's only run.
Notre Dame had four singles in the game, and had their best chance to score in the top of the seventh inning.
Savannah Dukich began the inning with a base hit, and was replaced on the bases by
Kayla Sidorski.
Megan Turner's sacrifice bunt moved Sidorski to second base, but Briana Lee would not allow her to go any further as she retired the next two batters to end the contest.
Wallace (1-4) pitched extremely well, despite the loss. She went the distance, and allowed just the one run on four hits while fanning six batters in the process. Lee (1-2) came away with her first win of the season, after fanning 10 batters and allowing just four hits through seven scoreless innings.
Notre Dame's offense did all of their damage in the fifth inning, but were silenced in the other seven frames in game two against St. Cloud State. The Huskies scores single runs in the fourth, sixth and won it in the eighth.
The Falcons plated both of their runs on a pair of hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rachel Miller started the inning with an infield single and made her way to second on Sidorski's sacrifice bunt.
Jessica Bequette was then hit by a pitch, setting up
Megan Turner's two-run double down the line in right to give NDC a 2-1 advantage.
SCSU's Mikayla Hogan tied the game in the next half inning on a solo homerun. Neither side put together much of a threat offensively through the next inning and a half, pushing the contest into extra innings.
The Huskies had two on with one out in the top of the eighth inning, when they capitalized on
Steph Glueck's error, which allowed Kelly Olson to score the eventual game winning run. NDC had a pair of runners aboard in the bottom of the eighth inning with two away, but couldn't find a way to push the tying run across.
Ashley Hall (1-3) came on in relief, and took the loss. She allowed a pair of runs, on three hits over three innings of work.
Ashley Harbarger started the game, and tossed five solid innings, allowing just a run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Turner's double was NDC's lone extra base hit on the day. She has hit safely in four out of her last five games, and she led NDC at the Rebel Spring Games with three doubles.
Kelsey Coleman did not reach in either game, bringing her 12 game on base streak to an end.
The Falcons are in action again on Friday, March 15, for their home opener, when they host Findlay at Campus Field. The twin bill is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
