Falcons drop a pair of close games in Kissimmee

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Notre Dame Falcons were on the wrong end of a pair of one-run decisions on Friday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games, falling 1-0 to Walsh, and 4-3 to Adelphi.

The Falcons (4-8) have now lost four in a row, since recording back-to-back shutout victories last Tuesday. NDC had a tough time getting their bats going in the opener against Walsh (7-2), in a 1-0 loss, and lost a heartbreaker in the finale, as Adelphi (N.Y.) defeated NDC on a walk off homer in the seventh.

The pitching was pretty good for NDC overall on the day, as Head Coach Amy Kyler used just a pair of hurlers, with Ashley Hall and Ashley Harbarger going the distance in both games.  They combined to surrender just four earned runs.

Notre Dame had a rough go of it offensively in the first contest, as they were only able to produce four hits in the opener against Walsh.  The Cavaliers took an early lead in the top of the first inning, on Chelsy Testa's sacrifice fly which plated Kayla Marcus.

Walsh added another one, which proved to be the eventual game winner in the top of the fourth inning, as they capitalized on a pair of NDC errors.  NDC tallied three defensive mishaps in the contest, and all proved to be costly.

The Falcons scored their lone run in the home half of the fifth inning. Amanda Arendt began the inning with a base hit, and Kayla Sidorski replaced her on the bases.  Later in the inning, with the bases full, Jessica Cavallero drove Sidorski home on a sacrifice fly.  NDC had the tying run at third, but Lindsay Carmean was picked off to record the final out of the inning.

Harbarger (1-2) took the loss, despite a solid effort.  She allowed just two runs, only one earned on four hits while fanning four in the process.  Walsh's Marissa Bondoni (2-1) came away with the win, after holding the Falcons to just a run on four hits.

Notre Dame used a three-run fourth inning to take the lead in game two against Adelphi, but the Panthers rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to come from behind and steal one from the Falcons.

The Falcons sent all nine batters to the plate in the top of the fourth, and took advantage of a few free passes to plate three runs.  Cavallero began the inning with single to center field, and eventually came around on Jessica Bequette's run scoring base hit to right field.  The next two batters, Steph Glueck and Kelsey Coleman walked with the bases loaded to give NDC a 3-0 lead.

Hall had surrendered just four hits over six scoreless innings before allowing four runs in the seventh.  Elizabeth Linder reached on an error to start the inning, and came around to score two batters later on another NDC error.  Heather Salerno's sacrifice fly scored Kayla Rieger, before Victoria Wink ended the game with a two-run homer to left.

Hall (1-2) allowed all four runs, only three earned on seven hits, struck out four and didn't allow any free passes, but suffered the loss.  Adelphi's Lauren Watts (3-0) struck out nine, and came away with the victory after allowing just three runs on five hits.

Megan Turner paced the Falcons offensively, going 3-for-6 in both games combined.  She had a pair of hits in the finale against Adelphi, and she has three multi-hit games on the season. Coleman hit safely in the first game against Walsh, but saw her nine game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-3 performance against the Panthers. However, she reached safely in both games, extending her on base streak to 12 games.

The Falcons will finish up at the Rebel Spring Games on Saturday, March 9.  They will face Wayne State (Mich.) at 9 a.m., and St. Cloud State (Minn.) at 11 a.m.
