Falcons fall twice at Rebel Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Notre Dame Falcons fell twice on Wednesday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games, falling 5-1 to Indianapolis in the opener, and lost via the Mercy rule, 8-0 in six innings to Rockhurst in game two.

The Falcons (4-6) saw a two game win streak snapped in their losses on Wednesday morning.  A total of four NDC errors haunted the Falcons in their first loss against Indianapolis (15-2) and they had a tough time offensively in the second game against Rockhurst (7-4), where they were only able to produce five hits.

A three-run fourth inning from the Greyhounds proved to be NDC's downfall in the opening contest against the Greyhounds, who continued their winning ways, having lost just twice in their previous 16 games.

The Falcons were able to draw first blood, plating the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning.  Kelsey Coleman began the inning with a base hit to right field, and moved over to second on Nicole Spehlar's sacrifice bunt.  A wild pitch moved her to third base, and she eventually scored on a passed ball.

The long ball paced the Greyhounds in the fourth inning to give them the lead.  Casey Williamson stepped in with the bases empty and one away, when she smashed a solo homer to center field to tie the game.  A few batters later, Bailey Wittenauer belted a two-run homer to left, giving Indianapolis the lead.

The Greyhounds added single runs in the fifth and seventh, taking advantage of four NDC errors in the contest to come away with their second win against the Falcons in the last three days.

Mackenzie Wallace (1-3) took the loss for NDC after allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits over 4.1 innings of action with a pair of strikeouts.  Ashley Hall came on in relief and surrendered an unearned run on one hit through 2.2 innings, while fanning four.  Indy's Morgan Foley (5-2) came away with the win.  She went all seven, and allowed just the run on two hits, with 13 strikeouts.

Fortunately for NDC, their defense was much better in the second game, but their bats couldn't keep up with Rockhurst.  The Hawks plated eight runs on seven hits, and won via the Mercy rule, 8-0 in six innings.

The Hawks scored early and often to take an immediate advantage.  A trio of singles started the game for the Hawks, and it was Demi Plathe's RBI single that plated the game's first run.  Later in the inning, Alex Jacobson gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to score Sadie Applegate.

Rockhurst added another in the second inning, but really put the game away with a four-run fifth inning.  A pair of walks, and a dropped third strike loaded the bases in the fifth for the Hawks, and Plathe came through with the game's biggest hit, a Grand Slam to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead.  Applegate came through with the game winner in the sixth inning, a run scoring single that put the mercy rule into affect.

Rachelle Miller (1-1) took the loss for NDC.  She was not able to get out of the first inning, and allowed two runs on three hits.  Rockhurst's Sydney Fairield (5-1) tossed six solid innings, and allowed just five hits in a winning effort.

Christine Camp led the way for Notre Dame offensively, going 3-for-6 on the afternoon with a trio of singles. Coleman recorded hits in both games, and has now hit safely in eight consecutive games, and has reached in all 10 games this season.

The Falcons are off on Thursday, but will continue play at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday, March 8.  They will face Walsh at 11 a.m., and Adelphi (N.Y.) at 1 p.m.
