KISSIMMEE, Fla. --
Mackenzie Wallace tossed a one-hitter in Notre Dame's first game on Monday afternoon at the Rebel Spring Games, as the Falcons went 1-1 on the day.
The Falcons (2-4) took the opener, 1-0 on the strength of Wallace's fantastic pitching performance against Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.), before falling in five innings in the second game to Indianapolis (14-2), 11-0.
Wallace (1-2) stole the show for NDC in the opening contest, as she took a no-hit bit into the bottom of the seventh inning. She allowed just two baserunners throughout the contest. Aleecia Sunagel broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the seventh.
The Falcons plated their only run of the contest on
Jessica Bequette's solo homer to left field in the top of the third inning. Bequette's bomb was one of nine hits in the contest for NDC.
All but two Falcons hits safely in the contest, including
Savannah Dukich, who paced NDC offensively with a trio of hits, going 3-for-3 with three singles.
Wallace issued a free pass, and allowed just the one base hit over seven strong innings, and fanned five batters in a winning effort. Wheeling's Ashley Nichols battled her way out of several jams, and came out as a hard luck loser, allowing just one run on nine hits through seven innings.
The problems began early on in the second game, where Indianapolis scored five times to set the tone. Indianapolis went on to score three more in the second, added a single run in the fourth, and put the mercy rule into affect with two runs in the fifth inning.
NDC was only able to muster a pair of hits in the contest.
Ashley Harbarger (0-1) took the loss for NDC, after surrendering eight runs, only four of which were earned on six hits through an inning and a third. Indianapolis's Jennifer DeMotte held NDC scoreless through four innings and allowed just a base hit to grab the victory.
Dukich led the way for NDC offensively, going 3-for-5 on the afternoon.
The Falcons are in action again at the Rebel Spring Games on Tuesday, March 5. They will face Quincy (Ill.) at 9 a.m., and Holy Family (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
