Sunday sweep

Falcons sweep Rams in Shepherdstown

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame Falcons used a balanced offensive attack and finished off a great weekend with a double header sweep of Shepherd on Sunday afternoon.

The Falcons (7-11) won the opener in their finest offensive game of the season, scoring seven times on 12 hits in a 7-3 victory, and used a pair of big frames to take game two, 11-3. The Rams (9-15) saw a two game win streak come to an end with the sweep.

The Falcons jumped on the board first in the opener with three in the third inning, before blowing the game open with two more in the fourth.  NDC plated a trio of runs on three hits in the top half of the third, and it was Christine Camp who started the rally.

Camp's single was the first of three consecutive base hits.  Megan Turner and Rachelle Miller followed Camp with singles of their own to load the bases.  Camp scored on a wild pitch before Turner came home on a passed ball, and Kelsey Coleman capped the big inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Miller.

NDC plated a pair of runs on three hits in the fourth inning, and did all of their damage with two outs.  Steph Glueck belted a two out base hit, and Christine Camp was plunked by a pitch moments later.  Turner and Miller followed with back-to-back run scoring singles to cap the inning.

The Falcons surrendered a run in the fifth, before getting two more in the seventh.  Christine Kasidonis started the inning with a base hit, and Jessica Cavallero followed with a single of her own.  Two batters later, Kayla Sidorski smacked a run scoring single, and Glueck drove in the final run on a double.  The Rams scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough.

The NDC offense registered a season high, 12 hits, with four players hitting safely more than once. Turner, Miller, Cavallero and Glueck all hit safely twice in the contest. Ashley Harbarger (3-2) won for the second day in a row.  Harbarger went the distance, and allowed three runs, only two earned on five hits while fanning nine in the process, giving her 20 strikeouts in her last two starts.

The Rams took an early advantage in game two.  They took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, on a Shannon Lyons RBI single.  The Falcons were kept off the board for three innings, until they exploded for four in the fourth.

It was the first of two four-run frames in the contest for the Falcons, as they scored four times on two hits to take the lead for good.  Miller started the inning with a single to center before Coleman was hit by a pitch.  Two batters later, Spuhler was plunked by a pitch to load the bases with two outs, and Sidorski came through with her first bomb of the season.  The Grand Slam gave the Falcons a 4-1 advantage.

NDC was able to plate four more on a pair of hits in the sixth inning.  The rally began with Coleman's double to right-center field.  Kasidonis was hit by a pitch before Cavallero reached on an error to load the bases.  Spuhler followed with a bases loaded walk to score Coleman, and Amanda Arendt then drove in the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Glueck then pinch hit for Camp, and delivered a big two-run single to put the exclamation point on the big frame.

They really put the game out of reach by scoring three times in the seventh.  Coleman reached on a one out single, and scored after Cavallero reached on an error.  With two outs, and two on, Sidorski struck again to cap her huge game, with a two-run single, scoring both Cavallero and Kasidonis.

Mackenzie Wallace (2-4) came away with the win in the second game.  She scattered a half dozen hits through five strong innings, and allowed just three runs, only two earned with a trio of strikeouts.

Sikorski had a huge second game, going 2-for-4 with six runs batted in, giving her seven RBIs on the day, while going 3-for-5 with a pair of singles and two runs scored as well.  Coleman went 3-for-3 in game two with a pair of doubles and three runs scored.  Glueck provided stability at the bottom of the order, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. On the day, the Falcons scored 18 runs on 20 hits.

The Falcons are in action again on Tuesday, March 26, for their home opener, which has been postponed four times. They will welcome Lake Erie to Campus Field for a double header, and game one is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
