SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- A late second half surge pushed Wheeling Jesuit past Notre Dame, 85-73 on Saturday afternoon at Murphy Gymnasium.
For the Falcons (2-5, 1-3 MEC), the loss was their third in their last four games, while the victory for the Cardinals (5-2, 3-1) was their fourth in a row overall, and third on the road this season.
The first half was tightly contested, though the Cardinals had the lead for the entire half after taking an early 5-0 advantage just a couple of minutes into the game.
Though the Cardinals shot the lights out, hitting 55.9-percent (19) of their 34 shots from the field in the opening half, including an incredible 53.8-percent (7-for-13) mark from 3-point land, the Falcons were able to keep pace, and trailed by just five (46-41) going into the half.
The Falcons ran with the Cardinals through most of the second stanza, and at one point held a five point lead (59-54) after
Jarvis Huntley's layup just five minutes into the half.
With just over five minutes left in the contest, the Falcons trailed by three (72-69), but the Cardinals turned it on defensively, holding NDC to just one field goal through the remainder of the contest. The Cardinals finished the game on a 13-4 run during that stretch to close the victory.
Tyree Gaiter led the charge for the Falcons with 20 points, six assists and five steals. Three other Falcons scored in double figures.Â
Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson buried a trio of 3-pointers on his way to a 15-point performance, while Huntley added 12 and
Lawrence DeArmond scored 10.Â
Geovonte Rose added nine points eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Falcons are in action again next Saturday, Dec. 14, when they play host to Shawnee State at Murphy Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
