NDC drops Shawnee State, 90-79

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons won their final home contest of 2013, in a 90-79 victory over Shawnee State at Murphy Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. 

Notre Dame (3-6) snapped a two-game slide with the victory while Shawnee State (6-5) has now lost three of their last five games. 

In the early stages of the game, the Bears had control taking a 10-5 lead. But from there, the Falcons quickly turned the momentum in their favor. The blue and white pulled ahead 18-14 causing SSU to take the game's first timeout.

The Falcons used the press and hawking defense to force the Bears into committing five turnovers within the first five minutes.
The Bears clawed their way back into a tie game at 18 with 13:52 remaining in the first half.

The largest lead of the first half came when Lawrence DeArmond hit a free throw with 6:48 remaining, a 31-23 advantage for the Falcons.

The closest the Bears would get to re-taking the lead was at 3:42 mark when the NDC lead was cut to one, 34-33.

After a back and forth first half, the Falcons took a 42-37 lead going into the break. They shot 38-percent from the field but hit 50-percent (8) for 16 from behind the three point arc.

The Bears, on the other hand, shot 48-percent from the field but only 30-percent from three point land.

The stifling defense from NDC continued throughout the half as Shawnee State was forced into 11 turnovers. SSU also committed 10 fouls.

Lawrence DeArmond had 18 points in the first half for the Falcons. He shot 5-6 from the field and 4-5 behind the arc.

Mark Bryant led the Bears in first half scoring with 14 points. He was 6-7 from the field and hit both of his three point attempts. He also added 8 rebounds.

In the second half, the Falcons took off and never looked back. They pushed the lead to 46-37 quickly in the second half off a couple of layups.

The lead was 57-41 with 15:26 to go in the second stanza after a Dean Kolstad layup.

Then it was the Bears turn to increase the energy. After a layup from SSU's Anthony Bendolph, the score was cut to 71-67 with 5:22 remaining, to cap a 19-2 run.
But the Falcons had enough to put SSU away by a final score of 90-79.

For the game the Bears shot 41-percent ( from the field including 43-percent behind the arc. They also knocked down 24 of their 32 free throws.
The Bears shot 46-percent from the field and 64-percent from the charity stripe.

All of the Falcons starting five scored in double figures with Lawrence DeArmond leading all scorers with 23 points.Tyree Gaiter was active on both ends of the floor, scoring 16 of his 19 points in the second half, while tallying six assists and seven steals. Jarvis Huntley added 18 points and seven boards while Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson scored 15 points and came away with seven rebounds as well.  Geovonte Rose had 10 on the day, while shooting a perfect, 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. 

The Falcons will play Cleveland State in exhibition on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m.
