INDIANA, Pa. -- The Notre Dame Falcons struggled in the first half on Saturday evening, and fell on the road to Indiana (Pa.), 87-70.
The Falcons (0-3) fell for the third time this season, while the victory for the Crimson Hawks (2-0) gives them a perfect start to the 2013-14 campaign.
The Crimson Hawks took control early on, establishing a lead early in the contest and never looked back. The two teams went back and forth through the early stages of the first half. Every time it looked like Indiana was going to pull away, Notre Dame would inch closer.Â
The Falcons were able to draw within three (23-20) halfway through on a 3-ball from
Jarvis Huntley, but that was as close as they'd get the remainder of the half, and the contest, as the Crimson Hawks caught fire. IUP went on a 19-2 run over the next six minutes, mounting a 42-22 lead with 3:43 left in the opening half.
Sharp shooting allowed the Crimson Hawks to maintain their lead, as the entered the half with a 49-32 lead, on the strength of a 58.1-percent (18-for-31) shooting performance from the field, including a 60.0-percent (6-for-10) clip from 3-point land.
The second half didn't prove to be any easier for Notre Dame, as IUP built a few 22-point advantages, and never allowed Notre Dame to get back into the contest. A smothering Crimson Hawk defense held the Falcons to a 35.5-percent (11-for-31) shooting performance from the floor, and the Falcons weren't able to recover from the first half deficit.
On the night, NDC shot 85.0-percent (17-for-20) from the charity stripe, and nailed 12-of-13 (92.3-percent) in the second half.
Leading the way for the Falcons was
Lawrence DeArmond, who finished the night with a team high, 20 points, six rebounds, and added a pair of steals and three assists.
Tyree Gaiter scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half, and paced the Falcons with seven assists.
Huntley was NDC's third scorer in double figures with 10 points, while
Ryan Hickoff added six rebounds and eight points. NDC was outrebounded, 39-23.
The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, Nov. 23, when they head to Athens, W.Va., for their first Mountain East Conference contest of the season, as they square off against Concord. The tipoff is schedule for 4 p.m.
