URBANA, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons won their second road game of the season on Wednesday night, as five Falcons scored in double figures, in a 96-87 victory over Urbana.
The victory for the Falcons (7-11) was their third in their last four games, and their first over Urbana since 2007, while the loss for the Blue Knights (9-11) was their third in their last four games.
Notre Dame used a sharp shooting performance, shooting 51.5-percent (34-for-66) and crashed the offensive glass, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds in the road victory.
Eric Dummermuth,
Tyree Gaiter,
Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson,
Jarvis Huntley and
Lawrence DeArmond all scored in double figures.
Urbana caught fire early on and established control right off the bat. The Blue Knights kept the Falcons off the board over the first two minutes, while they took a 7-0 lead during that stretch.
Notre Dame was able to put the fire out quickly, as they scored five quick points, and eventually came back to tie the game at 14-14, after Dummermuth's steal led to a Huntley layup with 12:52 remaining in the opening half.
The Falcons never trailed the rest of the half. Over the first 10 minutes of the half, they forced eight Urbana turnovers, and shot 52.9-percent (9-for-17) from the floor to establish control. NDC led by as many as seven (41-34) in the opening stanza, but Urbana cut the deficit to three (41-38) at the half on Josh Brown's layup at the buzzer.
The Falcons were outrebounded, 20-17, in the opening half, but eight of their rebounds came at the offensive end, providing plenty of second chance opportunities
The second half was tightly contested from start to finish. While the Falcons never trailed in the second stanza, they never developed a double digit lead. The Falcons shot the ball well over the first four minutes of the half to stay ahead, hitting 80.0-percent (4) of their first five shots during that stretch.
Urbana also shot well, and stayed well within striking distance, as the NDC lead would get no greater than six through the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Blue Knights brought the lead down to one after trailing by six on several occasions.
Notre Dame eventually brought their lead to eight, with 2:48 to play, after Figueroa-Jackson buried a trifecta, but as they had all evening long, the Blue Knights wouldn't go away. The Falcons then brought their lead to nine (88-79) with just over a minute left, after DeArmond grabbed a rebound off his own miss, and put it back in.
Over the final minute of the contest, Urbana was able to pull within five (89-84) but Gaiter nailed a few free throws to put the game away, closing out the victory.
Gaiter led the way for Notre Dame with 26 points, and was one assist shy of a double-double. Dummermuth added 20 points on the night, making him only the second player in school history to score over 2,200 career points. DeArmond turned in a double-double with a team high 12 rebounds to go along with 11 points, while Huntley added 10, and Figueroa-Jackson added 11 points and seven boards.
The Falcons will be in action again on Wednesday, Feb. 6, when they head back home to take on Central State (Ohio). The contest is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m.
