Falcons snap nine game skid against Cedarville in OT

Box Score
CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons scored their first victory in program history over Cedarville on Saturday afternoon, bringing a nine game skid to a halt against the Yellow Jackets, in an 88-83 overtime victory.

The victory for the Falcons (5-10) not only snapped a nine game losing streak against the Yellow Jackets, but it was also their first on the road this season, ending a seven game slide on the road. The loss for Cedarville (9-8) snapped a four game winning streak on their home hardwood.

Notre Dame led for the first 39 minutes of the contest, and held a nine point lead (71-62) with a minute to play, before the Yellow Jackets went on a 9-1 run in the game's final minute to force overtime.  NDC outscored Cedarville, 16-11 in the overtime period to seal the deal.  On the night, NDC hit 77.4-percent (24-for-31) of their free throws.

Notre Dame established control early on, and dominated the opening half.  The Falcons nailed six out of their first eight shots (75.0-percent), and found themselves ahead, 17-6, just six minutes into the contest.

NDC never surrendered the lead through the rest of the half, and led by as many as 12 on a few separate occasions, before taking a 39-27 advantage at the half.

In the second half, Notre Dame maintained a sizeable lead for the first six minutes.  They led by eight points (46-38), before the Yellow Jackets hit their stride and found their way back into the contest.  Over the next five minutes, Cedarville narrowed deficit to one (52-51).

The Falcons returned the favor with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes, which was capped by Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson's old fashioned 3-point play, giving NDC a 60-51 advantage with 6:50 remaining.

NDC never trailed, and it appeared as though they had the contest won in regulation, when they held a 71-62 advantage with one minute remaining, after Tyree Gaiter hit a pair of free throws.  The Yellow Jackets responded in the final minute of regulation by going on a 9-1 run, and forced overtime when Zach Brown hit a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left.

The two teams traded blows at the beginning of the overtime period, which saw the lead change hands four times, and it was Figueroa-Jackson's 3-pointer with 54-seconds left in the game that served as the dagger.  Figueroa-Jackson's 3-ball went in as the shot clock expired to give the Falcons an 83-79 advantage, and the Falcons never trailed the rest of the way.

Gaiter had a huge day for NDC, leading the way for the Falcons with a career high, 34 points to go along with four assists and six steals.  Eric Dummermuth added 19 points, getting nine of those from the free throw line, where he shot 81.8-percent (9-for-11) on the afternoon.  Lawrence DeArmond scored 10 points and added six rebounds.

"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to coach quality young men every day," said Head Coach Kevin Bille. "I couldn't be more proud of the growing up they did today.  This win is a long time coming and is for every guys that has ever played for us."

Notre Dame forced 24 turnovers, and came away with 10 steals, while committing just 12 turnovers in the contest.  They shot 45.1-percent (28-for-62) from the floor.

The Falcons will be in action again on Tuesday, Jan. 22, when they host the Tiffin Dragons at Murphy Gymnasium.  The contest is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m.
