Notre Dame Bears down

NDC rides big second half in home victory

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Notre Dame scored 52 second-half points in securing its first home victory since Dec. 1, as the Falcons defeated West Virginia Tech, 94-71, on Saturday afternoon at Murphy Gymnasium.

Notre Dame (5-11) has now won three in a row, marking its longest winning streak of the season, while the loss for WV Tech (7-9) spelled their fourth straight.

Both teams shot the ball fairly well over the first six minutes of the contest.  Neither side was able to grab a lead larger than four points, and at the 13:47-mark, the Falcons trailed by one, 13-12.

Points were tougher to come by over the middle minutes of the half. The contest was tied at 21-21 with 7:08 to play when the Falcons went on a 6-0 run to take a six-point lead.  NDC would drain a trio of triples in the two minutes that followed, taking a 40-29 lead by the two-minute mark. Two of those threes came from Courtney Clark who had 11 first-half points. The other came from Lauren Macer, who finished the half with 13 points.

The Falcons rode their perimeter shooting and a big rebounding edge to a six-point (42-36) by halftime.

Over the first eight-plus minutes of the second, Notre Dame added a slew of excellent interior passes-and-buckets to its 3-point game, and when Katie Stumphauzer knocked down a trey at 11:14, the Falcons found themselves up, 68-47.

The contest was never in doubt the rest of the way, as the Falcons saw their lead dip below 20 points just once, and they led by as many as 27 (92-65).

The Falcons shot the lights out in the second half, hitting 57.1-percent (20-for-35) from the floor, which included a 4-for-9 performance from beyond the arc.

For the game, Macer led the way for the Falcons with a game-high, 21 points. Four other players (Courtney Clark, Molly Ritz, Katie Stumhauzer, Alexa Tropiano) also scored in double figures for Notre Dame.

The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19, when they head to Cedarville, Ohio, for a road tilt against the Lady Jackets.  That contest is scheduled to tip at 2 p.m.
