Four big frames pace Falcons in twin bill sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons scored 17 times in Saturday's double header at Campus Field, plating all of those runs over four separate innings, as they took two from Point Park (Pa.), 9-1, and 8-3.

Notre Dame (9-15) has now won five games in a row, and they haven't lost since game one of a March 28 double header against Findlay.  For Point Park (19-19), the sweep gives them six losses in a row.

The Falcons scored all of their runs in the fourth and fifth innings of game one, taking the Pioneers in five innings, 9-1.  The mercy rule was one out away from taking effect in the second contest, as the Falcons were up 8-0 with two down in the fifth, before Point Park scored three times to extend the contest.

Game One

Point Park took its only lead of the afternoon in the top of the fourth inning when Ashley Morran snapped a scoreless tie with a solo shot to left.

Notre Dame answered with a four spot in the bottom of the inning.  PPU's Kelsey Robertson (10-7) had been cruising through three innings, but wet conditions caused her to struggled with her command, and she issued three consecutive one out walks, before hitting Jessica Bequette with the bases loaded to tie the game at 1-1.

Things didn't get any easier for Robertson, who then issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to Nicole Spehar and Megan Turner, before being replaced.  Spehar scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to put a cap on the four run frame.

NDC then scored five runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.   Jamie Clausen started the inning with a base hit to center, and made her way to third on Kelsey Coleman's double.  Felisha Jones reached on a one out error, which brought Clausen home, and Coleman scored on a wild pitch.

Spehar and Turner both knocked in runs on infield singles with the bases loaded singles, and Steph Glueck brought in the third run of the inning when she reached on a fielder's choice.  Michelle Dykes ended the game with an infield single to score Spehar.

The Falcons scored nine runs on five hits in the contest, and three players (Spehar, Jones and Coleman) scored multiple times, while Spehar led NDC with two RBIs.

Allysa Lancaster (4-0) tossed four strong innings for the Falcons, allowing just a run on a pair of hits, while striking out three to get the victory, while Robertson allowed four runs, and walked seven batters over three and a third in the loss.

Game Two

The Falcons picked up quickly in the second game, scoring five times in the second inning to take a commanding lead.

Coleman kick started the inning with a triple to center, and scored on Jones's sacrifice fly.  Runners wre at the corners when Spehar reached on a fielder's choice to bring Christine Kasidonis home.  Turner then stroked an RBI single beforeCandace Shofar capped the big inning with a sacrifice bunt to score Spehar.  Coleman capped the big inning with a run scoring double down the line in left.

Notre Dame added three more in the third.  Jones and Bequette belted back-to-back one out singles, which set up Turner's three run bomb to left field, her first of the season.

NDC was one out away from putting the mercy rule into affect for a second time, but the Pioneers struck for three quick runs in the top of the fifth, to extend the contest.

The Pioneers plated their first runs of the game when Amanda Ardinger stroked a two run double to left center field, and Morran followed with an RBI single to score the final run of the inning.

Ashley Harbarger (3-4) tossed a trio of scoreless innings to secure the victory for NDC.  She allowed just a hit, walked two and fanned two, while Ashlie Kuhn (2-7) was tagged with the  loss after allowing five runs on five hits over two innings.

Turner paced the Falcons on the afternoon, going 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and five RBIs.  Dykes went 3-for-7 and knocked in a pair of runs, while Bequette went 3-for-4 and scored three times on the afternoon.  Spehar was solid in the nine spot for NDC, going 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs.

The Falcons will return to action on Monday, April 16, when they host Salem International (W.Va.) at Campus Field.  The first pitch for the twin bill is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
