Lack of 3-balls haunt Falcons in loss to Cedarville

Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons hit on just 6.3-percent (1-for-16) from 3-point land at home on Saturday afternoon, and the lack 3-balls cost them, as they fell to Cedarville, 70-57. (Box)

For the Falcons (6-14) the loss marks their first at home since falling to Roberts Wesleyan back on Jan. 18. For Cedarville (14-7) the victory extends their winning streak to four, and marks their first road win since Jan. 7.

Cedarville took control from the beginning, and never trailed in the contest.  The Yellow Jackets caught fire early on, and established an early 11 point (13-2) lead, just over seven minutes into the contest.  The Falcons fought back, and were able to narrow the deficit to five (13-8) after a 6-0 run which was capped by Lawrence DeArmond's layup at the 10:11-mark.

The Yellow Jackets steadily built another double digit lead after surrendering six straight points, until the Falcons came storming back again, and brought the deficit back down to five (24-19).  Notre Dame used a 7-0 run to get back into the contest, but Cedarville once again caught fire.

A pair of free throws from Daniel Kohavi gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the half (38-22), with 53 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, and Cedarville took a 38-24 lead into the locker room at the half.

NDC shot 45.8-percent (11-for-24) from the floor in the opening half, but Cedarville capitalized on a few NDC mistakes, and scored 13 points off NDC turnovers in the opening stanza.  The Yellow Jackets hit 43.8-percent (14-for-32) of their shots in the first half.

The two teams went nearly two minutes without scoring at the beginning of the second half, before Cedarville's Austin Foote hit a 3-ball at the 18:03-mark.  The Falcons trailed by double digits the rest of the way.  NDC eventually brought the deficit down to 10 (67-57) with 42 seconds left, but never got any closer than that.

"I thought our guys worked really hard tonight, and did a lot of great things in the second half," said Head Coach Kevin Bille. "However, you're not going to win many games when you go 1-for-16 from 3-point land."

While Cedarville struggled from 3-point land in the first half, they caught fire from beyond the arc in the second, hitting 45.5-percent (5-for-11) from long distance in the second stanza.

Notre Dame shot 44.4-percent (24-for-54) from the floor on the afternoon, and 61.5-percent (8-for-13) from the charity stripe.

Marcquice Taylor was the only Falcon to score in double figures.  He scored 10 of his 18 points in the first half, and shot 58.3-percent (7-for-12) from the floor.  DeArmond and Phil Biggs each added nine points, while Biggs came away with nine rebounds as well.

The Falcons are in action again on Monday, Feb. 6, when they head home, to take on Ohio State-Lima at Murphy Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM.
