With the victory over the Tigers (4-19), Notre Dame (13-11) has won three straight games and six of its last seven. The Falcons are 8-3 since Jan. 1.
With its home-court win on Tuesday, NDC swept the season series from SIU, two games to none. The Falcons pounded the Tigers, 90-52, in Salem, W. Va., on Jan. 31. Tuesday's 39-point margin of victory marked Notre Dame's widest this season.
Notre Dame garnered the lopsided win with good defense and a great shooting night, particularly on threes and foul shots.
“I liked the way we played aggressively, up and down the lineup tonight,” said Head Coach
Katie Hine. “And that tenacity fed our offense.”
The contest opened with the two sides splitting the game's first 22 points. The Blue & White then went on a 9-2 run to take a 20-13 lead by the 10-minute mark. By the five-minute mark, the Falcons had built a 20-point advantage (38-18) on the strength of a swarming defense a solid collective shooting effort.
The Falcons finished the first half with a 48.6 percent (17-of-35) shooting mark from the floor and with a 46-22 lead on the Murphy Gymnasium scoreboard.
Megan Scarberry drilled three of NDC's seven first-half treys, and
Brittany Reddy tallied her jersey number in the scoring column, with 14 points.
By the 12-minute mark of the second half, Notre Dame had extended its lead to 40 points. In the balance of the game, Hine was able to substitute liberally and get significant minutes for the Falcon bench.
Senior forward
Alex Dackin finished the game with a season-high 21 points on an 8-of-12 shooting performance. As a team, NDC connected on 48.6 percent (29) of its 64 field-goal attempts. Nineteen of those attempts came from beyond the arc, and on those long-range shots, the Falcons shot 63.2 percent (12-of-19).
Also hitting season-highs in the points-scored column were
Brittany Reddy (14 points) and
Megan Scarberry (11).
Notre Dame will be in the friendly confines of Murphy Gymnasium again on Saturday when the Falcons host the Arrows of Ursuline College in a 2 p.m. tip.
NOTES FROM THE NEST …
HIGH FIVE: With Tuesday's victory, Notre Dame is now 5-0 all-time against Salem International. In their four previous meetings, the Falcons had averaged 95.5 points per game.
NICE REBOUND: After starting their season with four straight losses, the Falcons have now gone 13-7 in 20 games. Over that stretch, NDC has now had three three-game winning streaks. … Notre Dame has also rebounded at home -- the team is now 4-4 in eight games on College Road after starting the season 0-2 Murphy Gymnasium. … In their last game, the Falcons were just 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) at the free-throw line; on Tuesday NDC went 18-of-20 (90.0 percent) at the line.
PUTTING THE 'D' IN NDC: The Falcons have now played seven straight games without allowing a foe to score more than 67 points. In its last five games -- four of which were victories -- NDC has yielded just 54.6 points per contest. That trend figured to continue on Tuesday against SIU -- the Tigers came into the game ranked 278th-and-last in NCAA-II scoring, at 47.3 points per game.
EASY AS 1-2-3: NDC is shooting 58.6 percent (34-of-58) from beyond the 3-point arc over its last three home games. Prior to Tuesday night's contest, the Falcons had been shooting 34.4 percent (309-of-449) from 3-point range overall. …
