Road woes

Falcons drop sixth straight road tilt

Box Score TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons were unable to hold off an incredible second half surge by Tiffin, as the Dragons overcame a halftime deficit to the defeat the Falcons, 94-81, on Wednesday night. (Box)

For the Falcons (6-13) the loss marks their sixth straight away from home, leaving them without a road victory since Dec. 10.  For Tiffin (10-12) the victory marks their fourth in their last six games.

Five Falcons scored in double figures.  Phil Biggs led the balanced attack with 18 points.

The two teams had similar numbers in the opening half.  Neither side was able to pull away, though the Falcons held the lead for most of the opening stanza.  The Falcons and Dragons exchanged blows as the lead changed hands several times in the first nine minutes of the opening half, before Nathan Ensz hit a layup with 10:29 to go in the half, which gave the Falcons the lead.

While Notre Dame maintained the lead through the rest of the half, they were never able to mount a lead larger than six.  Tiffin dropped their deficit down to one (28-27) with four minutes to go, before Biggs ran off five straight points for the Falcons.

Kalomo Figueroa-Jackson's layup with two seconds remaining in the half gave the Falcons a 37-31 advantage heading into the locker room.  The Falcons and Dragons both shot 45.2-percent (14-for-31) from the floor in the opening stanza.

NDC made the difference from 3-point land, hitting 44.4-percent (4-for-9) of their shots from beyond the arc, while Tiffin connected on just 20.0-percent (2-for-10) from long distance. The Falcons also forced 10 Tiffin turnovers.

Things changed quickly in the opening moments of the second half.  Tiffin's Joe Graessle caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting three consecutive 3-point shots, giving the Dragons a 42-39 advantage.

The Falcons were not fazed by the red hot shooting of Graessle initially, and found themselves ahead 48-46, after Ensz's jumper with 16:11 to play.  However, NDC was rendered scoreless over the next three minutes, while the Dragons went on a 12-0 run to take a 58-48 lead.

NDC then hit another incredible stride from 3-point land, as Taylor Rieger's 3-pointer kick started an incredible 13-0 run over the next two minutes.  Rieger buried a pair of 3-pointers during that 13-0 run, which put the Falcons in the driver's seat again.  The Falcons nailed all five of their shots from the floor during that quick strike, giving them a 61-58 lead.

Tiffin answered quickly, scoring the next seven points.  NDC was down two (65-63) with 9:12 to play, before the Dragons went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes, giving them a commanding, 76-65 lead.  The Falcons just couldn't find an answer for Tiffin's sharp shooting, and the Dragons never looked back.

Notre Dame pulled within five (82-77) at the 2:09-mark after Marcquice Taylor's layup, but they could not get any closer than that, as the Dragons hit a few big shots, including a pair of big 3-pointers in the final two minutes to pull away.

While the Dragons hit on just 2-of-10 3-balls in the first half, they caught fire in the second stanza, draining 8-of-11 (72.7-percent) of their 3-pointers in the second half.

In addition to dropping in 18 points, Biggs also turned in another double-double with 12 rebounds.  Troy Baugh added 13 points, while Taylor added 12, Raphi Tekie added 12 as well and Rieger contributed with 11 points.

The Blue & White shot the ball well for the second game in a row.  NDC hit on 50.0-percent (32-for-64) of their shots from the floor.  In addition, the Falcons nailed 44.4-percent (8-for-18) of their 3-pointers, but were outrebounded, 38-28.

The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, Feb. 4, when they head home, to take on Cedarville at Murphy Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 PM.

NOTES FROM THE NEST ...

TAKING ON TIFFIN: Despite being separated by just 100 miles, the Falcons and Dragons have only met twice in men's basketball.  The two teams used to compete in the American Mideast Conference, before Tiffin obtained NCAA-II status.  Their only other meeting outside of Wednesday's clash, happened back on Nov. 27, 2001.  The Dragons defeated the Falcons, 85-78, in what was the seventh game in NDC history.

LOOKIN' FOR LOVE IN FEB: The month of February has not been too kind to the Falcons in recent years.  Since 2008, the Falcons are 7-15 in the month of February.
