A tale of two halves

Big second half not enough as Falcons fall to Eagles

Box Score
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Notre Dame Falcons caught fire from 3-point land on Saturday evening, hitting 50.0-percent (12-for-24) of their shots from beyond the arc, and scored 50 second half points, but despite the sharp shooting and the second half surge, the Falcons fell to Southern Indiana, 95-84.

Notre Dame (2-5) has now lost five out of their last six contests, while the victory for the Eagles (5-0) was their fifth in a row and keeps their unbeaten record intact.

SIU controlled the opening half, and led by 19 points at the break after scoring 53 first half points.  But the Falcons rallied and eventually brought the deficit to one in the second half, after hitting 47.5-percent (19-for-40) of their shots in the second stanza.

The Eagles caught fire early on, and nailed 72.7-percent (8-for-11) of their shots from the floor over the first six minutes of the contest.  They established an early 6-0 lead, and at the 13:50-mark, the Eagles were ahead, 18-11.

Both teams shot the ball exceptionally well though the first 10 minutes of the opening half.  Notre Dame stayed well within striking distance, thanks to an 80.0-percent (4-for-5) shooting performance from 3-point land, and they were able to narrow the deficit to four (22-18).  However, the Eagles outscored the Falcons, 19-4 over the next five and a half minutes, to take a 19-point (41-22) lead.

SIU shot 59.5-percent (22-for-37) in the opening half, and found themselves ahead, 53-34, at the break.  The Eagles outrebounded NDC, 22-10 in the opening stanza.  Despite the deficit, the Falcons were hot from beyond the arc, hitting 60.0-percent (6-for-10) of their shots from 3-point land, and committed just five turnovers.

The sharp shooting continued for the Falcons in the second half, as they hit three out their first four shots from the floor over the first two-and-a-half minutes of the second stanza.  Despite the sharp shooting, the Falcons were only able to narrow the deficit to 13 (58-45), but that was just the beginning of a monster comeback.

The Eagles were ahead by 16 (67-51) with 14 minutes remaining, before the Falcons went on a 9-0 run  over the next minute, and brought the deficit down to seven (67-60) with 12:53 to go.

NDC wasn't done, as Raphi Tekie drilled a big 3-ball at the 10:21-mark to bring deficit all the way down to four (69-64).  The trifecta from Tekie was NDC's ninth of the night, giving the Falcons 31 points over the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Lawrence DeArmond, who hit four 3-pointers on the night, drilled a big one at the 8:48-mark.  It was NDC's 10th of the evening, and it brought the Falcons within one (71-70).

While the Eagles were red hot from the floor in the opening half, they shot just 34.7-percent (8-for-23), but they responded to Tekie's 3-ball with an 8-0 run, to take 79-70 lead.

The Falcons were able to get back within four on two separate occasions after that big run, but the Eagles outscored NDC, 14-7 over the final 2:37 to run away with the victory.

"I'm extremely proud of our guys for battling back and giving us a chance to win against a premier Division-II program," said Head Coach Kevin Bille.

Five falcons scored in double figures to lead a balanced offensive attack.  Eric Dummermuth led the way with 19 points, and 11 rebounds.  DeArmond was 4-for-5 (80.0-percent) from 3-point land, and came away with 18. Marcquice Taylor scored 14 points, all in the second half, while Jarvis Huntley and Tekie both added 10 points each.

The Falcons will be in action again on Friday, Dec. 14, when they hit the road, and square off against Gannon (Pa.) in the first round of the Porreco Cup.  The contest is scheduled to tip at 7:30 p.m.
