Gannon pulls rank

10th-ranked Lady Knights down Falcons, 64-57, in defensive tussle

Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- In a game that marked Notre Dame's final home game in the 2012 calendar year, the Falcons fell to No. 10 (USA Today NCAA-II Coaches) Gannon (Pa.), 64-57, on Wednesday evening.

Collecting its sixth consecutive victory, Gannon (7-1) struggled throughout against a ball-hawking and energetic NDC defense.  For Notre Dame (2-8), Wednesday's contest sent the Falcons into a break -- NDC won't play again until Dec. 19 and won't be at home again until Jan. 12.

The Lady Knights -- now 12-4 in their last 16 road games -- were forced into 23 turnovers, their most since Nov. 9.  Notre Dame senior guard Lauren Macer drained five 3-pointers as part of a 22-point night.  She also garnered three steals.

Notre Dame jumped out to an 11-7 lead over the opening minutes of play.  With a swarming defense contesting every half-decent look for the Lady Knights, the Falcons extended their lead to six points (21-15) by the eight-minute mark.

Late in the first, Gannon began having some limited success with its offense, grabbing the momentum in what by that point had been established as a defensive tug-of-war.  A Kelsey McCoy jumper at 3:55 sent the Lady Knights on an 11-2 run, and GU grabbed the lead.  The visitors went into their locker room at halftime with a 34-28 lead.

In the second half, GU extended its lead to 11 by the 14-minute mark.  NDC chipped away at that lead over the next 10 minutes of game play in a low-scoring exchange.

Then, with a late spurt that mirrored their run in the first, the Lady Knights gained steam and went on a 7-0 run starting at the 3:37-mark.  Down 18 (64-46), the Falcons closed out the game with a run of 11 unanswered points.

Notre Dame finished the game 17-of-46 (37 percent) from the floor against a physical Gannon defense.  The Lady Knights outscored the Falcons by just one point (30-29) in a hard-fought second half.  Led by Lauren Macer's 5-of-9 night on threes, the Falcons scored 24 points from beyond the arc.

Gannon shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) for the game.  The Lady Knights hit 13-of-15 (86.7 percent) free throws, while out-rebounding NDC, 42-30.

Playing a solid floor game, the Falcons were a plus-one in turnovers, forcing 23 while committing 22.

Macer's 22 points were backed up by Danielle Ledrich, who netted 11.  Ledrich was also NDC's leading rebounder, with six.

Gannon was led by Brittany Batts, who scored 19 points.  Nettie Blake had 13 points and a game-high 12 boards.

Wednesday's tilt at Murphy Gymnasium marked the first between NDC and GU since the 1994-95 season.  In seven meetings, the Lady Knights now lead the all-time series, 6-1.

Notre Dame now finds itself on a two-week break after what has been a busy stretch of games since mid-November.  That break will come to an end on Dec. 19 when the Falcons travel to North Canton, Ohio, to take on the Walsh Cavaliers.
