ERIE, Pa. -- The Notre Dame Falcons saw a halftime lead disappear on Friday evening, as Gannon (Pa.) handed the Falcons their fourth road loss of the season, in an 81-66 decision.
For Notre Dame (2-6) the loss extends their road losing streak to six, dating back to last season, and they've now lost three in a row overall. For the Golden Knights (6-2) the victory snapped a three game slide, and was their first in nearly two weeks.
The contest was ultimately decided in the second half, where the Falcons lost their shooting touch, and shot just 36.6-percent (11-for-30) from the floor, while the Golden Knights outrebounded the Falcons, 28-11 in the second stanza, and shot 46.6-percent (14-for-30) from the floor, resulting in a 17-point point differential in the final 20 minutes.
Neither side was able to pull away during the first eight minutes of the contest. During that stretch, there was a large disparity in shots taken. NDC rattled off 15 shots during that stretch while the Golden Knights fired off just seven, but the Knights shot 71.4-percent (5-for-7) to keep game close.
Eric Dummermuth went on a tear during the first eight minutes, and was responsible for nine of NDC's first 13 points.
Notre Dame and Gannon were tied at 13-13 at the 11:28-mark, when the Golden Knights caught fire, and kick started the first big run of the contest. The Golden Knights went on a 7-0 run, which was capped by Robert Wilson's layup at the 8:45-mark to give Gannon a 20-13 lead.
NDC responded by scoring the game's next 12 points to regain the lead. The Falcons' 12-0 run was highlighted by
Tyree Gaiter's 3-ball with 5:33 remaining, which put the Falcons back in the driver's seat, with a 22-20 advantage.
The Falcons were ahead by five (25-20) after the aforementioned 12-0 run, and maintained a lead over the Golden Knights, until Robert Wilson buried a trifecta with 1:41 left in the opening stanza to tie the game at 31-31. The 3-pointer was part of an 8-0 run which put the Golden Knights back in front, but not for long as
Raphi Tekie knocked one down from beyond the arc with three seconds left in the half to give the Falcons a 36-34 advantage at halftime.
The two teams combined to turn the ball over 21 times in the opening stanza. NDC shot 44.8-percent (13-for-29) from the floor, but hit on 87.5-percent (7-for-8) of their free throws. Gannon shot well in the opening half as well, shooting 50.0-percent (13-for-26) from the floor.
The lead grew to five (41-36) for Notre Dame just a minute into the second half, but Gannon eventually knotted the contest up at 42-42, just two minutes later. Gannon regained the lead, 46-44, with 14:39 to play, and both teams went ice cold over the next two and a half minutes. After the cold spell, the Golden Knights caught fire, and scored the next 12 points to cap a 14-0 run.
Gannon's lead grew to eight (52-44) after the Falcons committed their fifth turnover of the second half at the 10:53-mark, and eventually extended to 14 (58-44) with 7:45 to play.
Notre Dame was held scoreless for nearly eight minutes, until
Lawrence DeArmond netted a jumper at the 7:23-mark, ending a string of seven straight missed shots. The shooting slump would be too much for the Falcons to overcome, as the Golden Knights outscored NDC, 47-30 in the second half to pull away.
Dummermuth led the way for the Falcons with 16 points, and delivered his fifth double-double of the season with a dozen rebounds. Gaiter scored 13 points on the evening to go along with three assists, and
Marcquice Taylor provided a spark off the bench with nine points and three assists as well.
The Falcons will be in action again on Saturday, Dec. 15, when they take on West Virginia Wesleyan in the Porreco Cup Consolation game. The contest is scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m.
