Box Score
SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Notre Dame scored its most points in a game since Dec. 29, 2010, as the Falcons topped the Hiram Terriers, 109-72, on Saturday.
Freshman guard
Tyree Gaiter scored a game-high 25 points, leading a quartet of Falcons scoring 16-plus points in the win over Hiram (1-2). Notre Dame (2-3) made 14 3-pointers in the game, and its 109 points marked its most in a single game since pouring in 134 against Ohio State-Mansfield midseason in 2010-11.
The Falcons scored 55 points in the first half and 54 in the second, shooting 54.9 percent (39-of-71) from the field along the way. Gaiter went 10-of-17 from the floor, including a 5-for-9 performance on treys, in piling up his season-high 25 points. His afternoon also included seven assists and four steals.
Fellow guard
Raphi Tekie added 18 points, while
Lawrence DeArmond (17 points) and
Eric Dummermuth (16 points, six rebounds) paced the Falcon frontcourt.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Notre Dame, and it upped NDC's home record this season to 2-1.
The Falcons trailed the Terriers, 17-16, after five minutes of play, but NDC then went on the first of what would be many runs in the contest. From the 15-minute mark to the nine-minute mark, the Falcons outscored Hiram, 18-9. That run and a late-half surge would send Notre Dame into halftime with a 55-44 lead.
The home five kicked of the second frame with a 12-2 run and were up 21 (67-46) by the 17:20-mark. Over the final 17 minutes, NDC gradually chipped into first a 30-point lead and by the end of 40 minutes, a 34-point margin.
Notre Dame out-rebounded Hiram, 42-34, and the Falcons forced 22 turnovers against just 10 of their own. The 72 points allowed marked a season-best for the NDC defense.
The Falcons were 14-of-29 (48.3 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc, with Tekie (six treys), Gaiter (five) and Cam Carlin (three) providing all of the long-range firepower.
NDC will look to double what the program hopes is a new streak of a different kind when the Falcons take on the Mercyhurst (Pa.) Lakers on Wednesday.
