Panthers pounce in second half

Notre Dame falls in season opener

Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Notre Dame fell, 60-46, to Ohio Dominican in what marked the Falcons' 2012-13 season opener on Friday.

The Falcons (0-1) faltered down the stretch, shooting just 21.7 percent (5-of-23) in the second half after being tied with the Panthers (1-0) at the 12-minute mark in the second half.  ODU's Kacee Hockenberry scored 18 points to lead all scorers.  Lauren Macer scored 17 to lead Notre Dame.

Solid guard play propelled Notre Dame in the first half, an evenly-played 20 minutes that saw both teams put up similar stats.  Macer scored 11 points to pace the NDC side, and the two teams went into halftime deadlocked in a 26-26 tie.  The Falcons got strong rebounding in the first half, and that went a long way in mitigating a sluggish shooting performance (8-of-27).

The Panthers came out strong to start the second half, opening up a six-point lead (35-29) by the 16:42-mark.  A Macer bucket at 12:58 evened the affair at ODU's Alumni Hall, at 36-36.  From that point-on, it was all ODU.  The Panthers stifled the Falcon offense and had their own half-court game in high gear, as they outscored Notre Dame, 24-10, over the final 12 minutes of play.

NDC was outshot and outrebounded over the second half, with the Panthers winning the game at home while shooting just 33.9 percent (19-for-56) for the 40-minute game.

Macer had seven boards to go with her 17 points.  Molly Ritz had 10 points and six rebounds.
