Late surge Locks it up for Eagles

Lock Haven downs Notre Dame, 93-57

Box Score
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- A late one-sided run by the home five lifted Lock Haven (Pa.) to a 93-57 victory over Notre Dame on Wednesday.

Outscoring the Falcons, 31-7, over the final eight minutes-and-41 seconds o play, the Lady Eagles (2-1) came away with the victory in the first meeting between LHU and NDC.

Notre Dame shot 30 percent (18-for-60) from the field, as the Falcons (1-7) lost their fourth straight.

In the opening half, Notre Dame came out strong, jumping out to a 7-4 lead over the first five minutes of play.  Lock Haven then went on a 13-3 run to claim a seven-point advantage (17-10).  The Lady Eagles built that lead by forcing several turnovers in the early going.

Lock Haven kept the pressure on, upping its lead to 14 by the 5:56-mark. NDC's defense then countered with a high-energy stretch, forcing miscues and feeding a rally.  When Jacki Harrison came up with a layup off a steal at the 37-second mark, the play capped off an 8-2 run for Notre Dame and cut the LHU lead to six.

The Lady Eagles hit a trey moments later and went into halftime, up 43-34.

Early in the second half, NDC got a 3-pointer from Danielle Ledrich and a three-point play from Lauren Macer.  Those plays keyed a run that whittled the LHU lead to four points by the 16-minute mark.

But that run would be too little in a game that saw the momentum swing back to the Lock Haven side and for good.  LHU added 10 points to its lead by the mid-point of the second half.

Then, with a Hannah Gildea trey at the 8:21-mark, the Eagles embarked on a four-minute, 20-2 run that put the game out of reach for a Falcon team struggling with its offense.

Notre Dame in fact scored just one field goal in the final eight minutes and 40 seconds of the game.  That stretch led to the eventual 36-point victory for the home five.

After losing back-to-back games in heartbreak fashion (and by a combined three points) in mid-November, the Falcons have now lost by an average of 29.8 points in their last four defeats.  Wednesday's 36-point margin of defeat marks the program's largest in a game since 2009.

Gildea finished with a game-high 18 points and six rebounds for the Lady Eagles, who out-rebounded NDC, 51-31.  Five LHU players posted double figures in the scoring column as the Eagles earned their second straight 30-point win at home (LHU defeated Mansfield-Pa., 82-44, on Nov. 17).  Lock Haven shot 51.5 percent (35-of-68) from the field in Wednesday's win.  The Lady Eagles were 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc and 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) from the foul line.  Lock Haven did a credible job in turning defense into points, scoring 32 points off 27 NDC turnovers.

Lauren Macer scored 15 points to lead Notre Dame.  The senior guard has now led the Falcons in scoring in 6-of-8 games this season.  Macer's 15 points came on a 5-of-13 shooting performance; she hit three treys and dished out five assists.

Macer's 15 points were backed up by Danielle Ledrich's 10.  Alexa Tropiano added eight points and four boards.

The Falcons will look to halt their skid with a home contest on Saturday afternoon, when NDC welcomes Wilberforce to Murphy Gymnasium for a 1 p.m. tilt.
