Notre Dame (10-10) was led by the recent hot hand of senior
Alex Dackin as she scored a game-high 15 points in just 16 minutes of action to lead four Falcons in double-figures. Dackin who went 5-of-10 from the floor was joined by sophomore
Danielle Ledrich (14), freshman
Martha Nagbe (13), and sophomore
Brittany Reddy (11) in double-figures.
Salem International (3-17) Tre'Shaun Roberson scored a season-high 10 points, collected four rebounds and blocked a game-high four shots for the Fighting Tigers in the losing effort.
Dackin stole the ball on SIU's initial possession before
Tiffany Adkins made easy work of a
Lauren Macer assist to give the Falcons an early lead.
That lead would be short lived as the Fighting Tigers responded to tie the game, the first of two ties in the opening 20 minutes.
After Salem International tied the game at 12-12 with 13:52 remaining in the first half the Falcons used a 13-0 run spurred by Dackin and Reddy.
The duo combined for 11 of the Falcons 13 points as Notre Dame jumped out to a 25-12 lead when Dackin completed a trip to the foul line at the 10:54 mark.
Reddy would stretch the Blue & Gold's lead to 21 at the 5:05 mark when she sank a foul shot giving NDC a 37-16 advantage.
Monigue Hill trimmed the visitor's lead to 17 (41-24) as the first half came to a close.
The Fighting Tigers opened the second half on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 41-26 within 80 seconds.
However junior
Lauren Macer responded with a 3-point shot to start an 11-0 run for the Falcons to firmly plant NDC in the lead, 51-29.
Veronica Wheeler's basket with 14:36 would bring the hosts within 20, 51-31 however it would be the closest they would get for the rest of the evening.
The sizable lead allowed head coach
Katie Hine to make wholesale substitutions as 13 players saw action and the Falcons bench outscored their counterparts 38-16.
Only freshman
Molly Ritz failed to score for NDC as she went 0-for-4 from the floor and 0-for-2 from the foul line. The Cambridge, Ohio, native did however pull down a game-high six rebounds, provided a block and an assist to go along with two steals.
Sophomore
Brittany Reddy continued her scoring touch as she scored in double-figures for the second consecutive game for the first time in her career. The transfer from Armstrong Atlantic State has averaged 10.8 points per game over her last five appearances. For the season the 5-foot-7 guard from Strongsville, Ohio, is averaging 5.9 points per game in 19 appearances.
When freshman
Courtney Palmer scored with 19 seconds remaining to give Notre Dame a 90-52 lead the Akron, Ohio, native gave the Falcons their highest point total (90) and their largest margin of victory (38) for the season.
The Falcons pesky defense forced the SIU into 2162 turnovers for the game. Freshman
Martha Nagbe led the defensive attack with a game-high four steals. For the game Salem shot just 36.2 percent (21-of-58) while Notre Dame buried 51.6 percent (33-of-64) from the field.
The Falcons will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when Notre Dame hosts Cedarville with a 2 p.m. tip at Murphy Gymnasium.
