Falcons drill Wilberforce with second half surge

WILBERFORCE, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons outscored Wilberforce 48-36 in the second half of Wednesday night's contest, as they won their first American Mideast Conference contest of the season, with a 78-65 victory. (Box)

For the Falcons (6-9, 1-2), the victory marked their second in their last three games, and snapped a four game road losing streak in conference play. For the Bulldogs (2-11, 0-5) the loss marked their fifth in a row, rendering them winless since Dec. 4.

The Falcons held a 30-29 lead at halftime, but shot the lights out in the second half, going 16-for-22 (72.7 percent) from the floor, and shot 52.0 percent throughout the contest on a 26-for-50 shooting performance. Notre Dame also shot well from the free throw line, netting 80.0 percent (24-for-30) of their shots from the charity stripe.

Four Falcons scored in double figures, including #Eric Dummermuth# who paced the Falcons with 23 points and nine rebounds. Dummermuth is now just three rebounds away from setting the school record for career rebounds. #Phil Biggs# turned in his second double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while #Nate Ensz# scored 17 points and blocked four shots. #Rodney Mickens# contributed with 11 points.

“I'm very pleased with the way we played on both ends of the floor tonight,” said Head Coach #Kevin Bille#. “Our big guys dominated inside, especially on offense, and our guard play was solid throughout the night. I hope we can use this to develop some momentum moving forward.”

The Blue & White will return to action on the road for another AMC tilt on Saturday, Jan. 8. The Falcons will square off against Walsh, the defending AMC champs. The contest is scheduled to tip at 4:00 p.m.

BULLDOG MENATLITY: Wednesday's contest marked just the fourth meeting all time between the two teams, and the first matchup away from Murphy Gymnasium. Notre Dame is now 3-1 against the Bulldogs all time, with their only loss in the series coming back in 2006. The Falcons defeated the Bulldogs, 75-56 a year ago, and won 67-61 in 2009.

JUMP FOR JANUARY: Notre Dame has played extremely well in the first month of the calendar year over their last two seasons. The Falcons are 15-4 in January since the 2008-09 season, and have now won five games in a row in the January. Last season, Notre Dame went 8-1 in January, and went 6-0 at home in the first month of the calendar year.

1,500 CLUB: By scoring 23 points on Wednesday night, Dummermuth is now one of just three players in the history of the program to score more than 1,500 points in his career. The Dover, Ohio, native ranks third on the all-time scoring list behind Dave Hillborn and Jerome Pierce.
