Falcons steal a split

NDC goes 1-1 in Friday games

PANAMA CITY, Fla. --  The second day of competition at the Leadoff Classic was similar to the first as Notre Dame again earned a split, this time against a pair of Alabama schools.  Sophomore right fielder #Michelle Dykes# went 2-for-3 with three stolen bases and senior hurler #Tara Meyer# tossed a two-hitter in the second game, a 2-1 victory over Faulkner. (Gm-1 | Gm-2

Dykes swiped second and third and then scored on a two-out single by #Angela DiCesare# in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win.  Earlier in the day, the Falcons were shut out by Auburn Montgomery, 6-0.

Notre Dame (3-5) will conclude their play at the Leadoff Classic on Saturday with another doubleheader at the Frank Brown Complex in Panama City, Fla.

Game 1

In the opener, Auburn Montgomery (7-3) scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead.  That would be more than enough run support for freshman starter Brandi Richards, who would go the route (seven innings) allowing just a pair of Anna Ball singles.

Richards walked seven and struck out 11 in shutting out the Falcons. The Lady Senators tacked on a pair of insurance runs in their half of the sixth to close out the scoring at 6-0.  Notre Dame got a runner in scoring position in the first, third, and seventh innings against Richards but failed to score each time.

Auburn Montgomery out-hit NDC, 10-2, in the game, as the Falcons were shut out for the first time in the 2009 season.  Ball led the NDC offense in the first game, going 2-for-4 with a walk.  The Falcons' five-, six- and seven-hitters went a combined 0-for-8 with seven strikeouts against Richards.

Game 2

In the nightcap, NDC rode the strong pitching performance of Meyer to victory.  The senior from Chagrin Falls went the distance, facing only one more batter than the minimum in evening her season record at 2-2.

The Falcons got on the board first as freshman #Mallory Harder# hit her first home run as a member of the Blue & White in the bottom of the first.  After Faulkner knotted the game in their half of the sixth on an RBI by senior second baseman Jessica Tumlinson, Notre Dame came through with some late game heroics in the bottom of the seventh.

Dykes picked up her fourth hit of the season, second of the game, before swiping two bags to get in scoring position for DiCesare.  The Falcon left fielder picked the perfect time to pick up the first hit of her career as the Falcons celebrated the walk-off victory.

NDC managed seven hits off of Faulkner sophomore starter Katy Wiggins, who finished with six strikeouts in the loss.  Meyer struck-out four on the day.

Notre Dame will continue their play in the Leadoff Classic on Saturday.  The Falcons are slated to take on Lee (Tenn.) at 11 a.m. and William Carey (Miss.) at 1:30 p.m. before their return trip back to northeast Ohio.

NOTES FROM THE NEST…

SHUT DOWN:  In the first game, the Falcons were shut out for the first time since April 25, 2008 (vs. Point Park-Pa.).  NDC was blanked just once last season, when they averaged 5.7 runs per game.
